Wally13: "This snow storm will certainly help the present fire danger condition.
On average 13 inches of snow equals 1 inch of rain. Northern Minnesota and Southern Ontario are going to need a lot more snow and rain to help with present drought conditions.
"
talking a wet snow in many areas and a total meltdown of snow of 2 inches of water.

AlexanderSupertramp: "Yikes, looks like I too will not be attempting an overnighter that I had planned. Maybe the following weekend. If it's cold enough maybe things will be in decent shape."
If we get that much snow and ice now is down to 14 inches or less, the lakes will be pure water slush on top with holes created by water coming up through the ice. An absolute mess.

Maybe I will roll the dice and go up this Saturday for one night, forecast right now says snow not starting until Sunday afternoon, which gives me time to get home. Of course, that could all change and I really hate wind. Backup plan is Mom's property across the river in WI, close to home.

I guess our lake skimmed over on ice again. I’m glad that it’s going to happen. I was waiting for such an event… Meanwhile I enjoy the sunshine waiting for surgery in ten days. With the highlight of Adam coming to visit me. And while down he got to see his daughter. Haha. I may have that a little mixed up… haha! Meeting both son and daughter I can attest he is an amazing dad… those kids are great kids!

tumblehome: "Well this is interesting. Here are snow estimated forecast totals as of Friday AM. Let's see where this ends up. Pinetree wins with 16-31 inches forecast.
"
Yes that one is scary 18-31 inches at top . I can handle 18,but 31 inches that is going to be hard on my pine trees. Most have us at around 16 inches. But like the past it gets that high nobody knows where it will end up.
Got snowshoes and skis ready, going to grocery store this morning.
Maybe I can send the snow to Ben in Nashwauk>

plmn: "So far another overhyped dud here in Western MN. Quite a nice day to be outside, a light snowfall of a few inches with mild temps just below freezing. "
Different story just an hour east of you. No school tomorrow already in Perham. Even the DQ is closing, and I thought they were known for their Blizzards.

It's really piling up here in the southwest metro. After this women's Iowa State game, I'm turning in and I'll be interested to see what we net on terms of snow totals in the morning.

Dud in the south metro. The few inches we did get were high in moisture content...very wet and heavy. Rain today.

We have the same as Jimmyjustice with about 3" or so of wet, heavy snow in southwest Minneapolis. MSP airport measured 8.2 inches which is only a couple miles from my house. So there is a lot of variability in snow fall totals depending where you are. Weather reports are focusing on the North Shore which sounds like it's going to get pummeled with snow and winds. Hopefully, it alleviates at least some of the drought.

Snow totals from WTIP (Cook and Lake Counties) as of this morning:
Snowfall totals for Cook County:
WTIP Station – 6 inches
County Road 7 – 6-7 inches
Good Harbor Hill – 9 inches
Lutsen – 5.5 inches
Tofte – 8-9 inches
Mid-trail of the Gunflint near Poplar Lake – 3.5 inches
Seagull Lake – 2.1 inches
Reservation River in Grand Portage – 9 to 10 inches
Hovland – 7-8 inches
Lake County
Finland – 9.4 inches
Silver Bay – 7.8 inches
An additional 2 to 4 inches for most areas is currently falling. I think the NWS forecast also notes a 5 to 9 inch total further inland from about American Point west to Lac La Croix.
It's also coming down pretty heavy in the Twin Cities this morning.
