Man rescued who got lost on a walk away from camp. The general rule of thumb when you realize you are lost is to just stop. If you have a whistle, start blowing into it.

Glad he was found, easy to get turned around, had to be scary. I hope a lesson was learned:)

It's worthwhile to recall that most, if not all, smartphones have GPS and that capability is not linked to cell or internet connections. If you take a smartphone with you and it's charged you have GPS. Google maps may not work well without data but if you have an app like Gaia GPS you will have a serviceable map with your location.

I am reluctant to take my phone but it is useful in some circumstances.

It can be easy to get turned around. Especially if it's lower light and not a familiar area. I'm glad the fellow got picked up and everyone involved was safe.

"The sheriff's office said the locator coordinates put the group on Malberg Lake but there was no information on what kind of emergency they were facing because the locator cannot send messages. "

This points to the need to bring a locator that enables two way commuication, not just a PLB. With a PLB rescuers receive the SOS and plan and mobilize based on the worst case scenario. With a Spot/Garmin Inreach/Zoleo, etc, you can send the SOS and comunicate the severity of the situation, and specific needs.

Every group should have some type of emergency satellite messenger with two way communication.

We were camped on the west side of Insula and wondering what all the commotion was about. Could have been worse...

a simple compass will do.
