Heading to Sawbill this summer, and wondering about day trips on SUPs.

I've done the Sawbill>Alton>Kelso loop before... wondering if there are other MUST see loops or out and backs?

Immediate thoughts are the lady chain (Beth/Ella/Grace/Phoebe) or the Fire Lakes. I guess if we're really crazy we could try to go up to Cherokee.... ???

Haven't been to any of those listed options.....is there a certain one you'd prioritize over the other? I know portaging a SUP can be tricky for shorties but ours are very light 22lbs, and hopefully, with 2 people we'd have no problems doing longer portages even if we double portaged...

Thanks.

Not a loop, but a shuttle over to Baker Lake entry and paddle back to Sawbill is a nice tour. Four portages so a bit of a challenge there, but beautiful lakes.

This is what I was going to suggest I really like the run from Baker to Kelly as I’ve been there multiple times and I’ve been from Sawbill to Smoke with little duckling and liked that as well . I have not been to Burnt. I have seen moose on Peterson and Kelly.

Before you leave Kelly for Burnt, run up to the portage between Kelly and Jack to visit the abandoned gold mine.

I have no idea the speed of a SUP. Canoes can keep up a steady 4mph depending on the wind. A day trip in a tandem canoe from Kawishiwi Lake along the Lady Lakes back to Sawbill is possible to complete within a long day without all the extra packs. Take a pack with lunches and some emergency gear.

You could start at Sawbill and go west along the Lady Lakes until you have to turn around to get back before dark. I would think that you could at least get to Phoebe Lake.

Another longer day trip would be to start at Brule Lake and head west to South Temperance, turn south along the Temperance River Lakes (Weird, Jack, Kelly) and then return to Sawbill via the Fire Lakes. Probably not as long as the Lady Lakes. Again this depends on the cruising speed that you can maintain.

You could head north to Wine Lake, however, with the 480 rd. Lujenida-Zentih portage, you may spend more time walking then padding.

Hog Creek entry to Perent Lake and back might be a nice day trip for a SUP. It would depend on the water level in the Creek.

If the water stays up in Hog Creek it could be good on a SUP. Have done this route many times, in low water it can be tough. If later in the season there will be quite a bit of vegetation in the water that might be a problem with the rudder on the SUP. It would be on my partners board. I have done the Cherokee loop from Sawbill in a day in a canoe and its pretty long with a fair bit of portaging. My spouse is faster on her SUP than me in the canoe, but we are both pretty strong paddlers. Have a great paddle.
