Have you ever seen these in the BW? We saw them on one of our first trips. On Ruby Lake. They were magic.

NO KIDDING. Do they have singers too? We'll be in that area next year and will have to look for them.

According to the Nature Conservancy they do have stingers however "there isn't any hard evidence that suggests that they can penetrate through our skin to hurt us the way larger, marine jellyfish could."

And they don't sing either. :)

However, when we saw them, they were extremely numerous which might give me pause to swim with them.

Evidently they are also non-native, introduced presumably with stocked fish or aquatic plants. Good/bad? I don't know, but they were very lovely.

Was there someone with to pee on your sting? I hear that clears them up.

there are tiny marine jellyfish that can kill you, so I don't know if size has anything to do with it.

that's all I've got...

I've seen them a couple of times around here (OH, KY, IN). The time when I was scuba diving in a quarry with them was the best though! Very cool.

I did not know there were freshwater jellies, let alone any in the state of MN.

Huh.

I learn more here on accident ...

Its true. Being raised around the ocean, I've been stung many times by jelly fish, mostly a mild irritation. Never got peed on, but once I was in dire agony from a Portuguese Man-of-War sting and a friend peed in the sand and I applied the sand to the sting. It worked. It is the Ammonia that will neutralize the enzymes causing the sting. Many bug-bite itch remedies are mostly ammonia for the same reason. You just need to get it on quick.

Hhmmmm. Freshwater jellies. I certainly learned something new today. :)

I'm originally from the E Coast and your lucky if a Man of War stung you only once. I've seen them as big around as a 55 gal. drumhead. You are correct it hurts like hell (stings). Back when I got stung we didn't know about peeing on the sting if I'd have known I would have peeed on myself. Sounds gross but it stings so bad you'll do what ever it takes to ease the pain.

Whoa JB! I didn't realize they got that big. I've seen them as big as a softball or so. Yes, the burn of the sting is like having your skin on fire with no way to put it out.

Still love the ocean though. I consider it the great wilderness.

Friend just got back from diving at a quarry near Indianapolis this past weekend and happened to get this picture. Thought you'd enjoy. It was about as big around as a nickel.

Yeah, I'm guessing they could be a cause for a few clogged filters. None-the-less they sure are pretty and interesting.
