Traditions and making memories with family are what it's all about... Speaking of that..... we are doing our daughters' favorite "tradition" next week and we are so excited about it. They talk about this trip all year long and our older daughter (12) even said that she's going to continue this tradition when she has her own kids someday ;) This will be our 8th year spending MEA weekend in Grand Marais. This is the one thing that we do every year at the same place and same time.

quote OneMatch: "What wonderful traditions and memories you three have and will continue to make! An absolutely lovely report. I am spellbound by the wonderful pics of Anna in 2007 and Anna today. Also, it looks like Spartan1 and Anna take their games quite seriously!

Please tell Anna a big "thank you" from me for "taking me along" on Seagull with "Headwind".

Finally, I'm not sure there's such a thing as too many loon photos!"

Thanks, Jerry.

Our family has always been big into board games of many types. It is the way we like to spend an evening together. We started with our own children when they were toddlers, and our children did the same with theirs. When we all get together there is always a game!

As for photos, Anna has learned her technique, if you can call it that, from Grandma. I taught her that when she is in the canoe and photographing a waterbird, to keep clicking. (The joys of digital and the "delete" function.). She must have shot 200+ images for me to go through in order to find a few that were in focus and keepers, but we were having such fun! And I had the better camera with the better lens, so she is always comparing.

Next year for her birthday, I plan to buy her a better camera. She is still using a small Canon PowerShot IS that I gave her when she was seven years old. She does a great job with it, really. Only 7.3 mega-pixels.

quote CityFisher74: "Awesome! I wouldn't think twice about stopping at Gordy's when I'm in Cloquet. If I were there immediately following Thanksgiving dinner I would still get a burger."

We first learned about Gordy's on here. I believe it was ArkansasMan (Thanks, Bruce.) We have now taken both of our grandchildren there, and it got thumbs up all the way around. Just cannot think of a better place for a burger, shake, and onion rings.

Please do return. No tears necessary, but I have to tell you as I was making Anna's book, it was one of the best labors of love I have done in a very long time. Reliving those 12 1/2 days and realizing how blessed we are to have a grandchild who has come to love the canoe country and treasures her time with us, and her time in our favorite place. . .that did warm Grandma's heart a bit.

A tear in my eye kept me from picking up the last few pages of your report. I will return.

Thanks Spartan2 for a very good trip report. You say it is not a canoe trip, I'm not so sure. Definitely a culmination of many canoe trips that brought you to this one.

It's wonderful that you can share precious memories of the canoe country with your granddaughter, even though you can no longer take a backcountry trip.

I'm wondering if I have taken my last canoe trip with my grandpa, even though he's still healthy. He just got so tired on the trip we did last August. Maybe someday I'll get a cabin on Saganaga for the two of us for a couple days so we can rent a motor boat, fish and relax (even though, as Grandpa says, that'll be the day I can't paddle!) . We both have the same love for the Boundary Waters.

I'm grateful for the many wonderful memories I have made with him up there, and am glad that Anna has many similar wonderful memories with her grandparents. Thanks for sharing!

Awesome trip report. It's been so much fun watching her group up with you up north. Thanks for sharing this summer's adventures. We missed being at Rockwood at the same time by just a few days.
