01/13/2013 09:33PM That was our first brand-new car. It had paisley-print vinyl on the top and also the upholstery trim, dark brown. (actually much richer and prettier than it sounds.) It was gorgeous, and to this day I remember it fondly!! :-) |

01/10/2013 02:46AM Sounds like you were quiet the trooper. Great old time report. Loved the picture of the old car, why didn't we put them old classics in storage? Think of what they would be worth now. I had a 1969 Dodge Charger Special Edition Limited Edition with the Hemi engine. Sure wish I had that car back. FRED |

01/09/2013 11:52PM Somehow I missed the original posting of this report so I am happy that it got pulled out of the shadows so I could read it! Love all the old photos... such a great story to be able to tell your son. It reminds me that we used to bring "russian tea" camping which was a mix of tang/tea/lemonade/spices. Might have to resurrect that recipe for the boys! |

01/09/2013 07:02PM Very cool to look back that far in history. It sure was different back then. No sunscreen, no pfd's, canvas tent, and tang. I also noticed Neil's converse lowtops. It's nice how the baby plans went perfectly too. Thanks for the write up. I enjoyed the old time pics too. |

09/27/2012 06:37PM Another enjoyable report! And let me tell you, I may have shrunk an inch or so from my former height of 6'2", but even at THAT height those "Steps" are friggin HIGH on that portage. Another funny note. On our way "Out" this year, coming into Ham Lake we met a couple ladies whom were on their way back because they couldn't find the "Real" portage. Apparently, they were checking out the same one you'all were! Stated they decided there was no way they could portage THAT and said we "Saved" their trip by coming out on the "Right" portage just as they were paddling in. They were headed for Frost and I hope they made it! |

Well, BWP, because I have to prepare meals for an insulin-dependent diabetic with history of end-stage kidney disease, I have ALWAYS had to check the labels. FYI: Original Tang has 100% of your RDA of Vitamin C, 10% RDA of Vitamin A, Calcium, Vitamin E, Riboflavin, Niacin, and Vitamin B6 in an 8-ounce serving. Along with 40 calories, 9 grams of sugar. There used to be a sugar-free Tang (I don't know if there still is) but we tried it and we didn't like it. We don't use a lot of artificial sweeteners as we aren't interested in eating chemicals. Spartan1 counts the carbs and has the sugar. He is slender so he can adjust his insulin accordingly and I NEVER drink (or serve) Tang except on a canoe trip. |

I refuse to check the label, but am convinced it MUST have more vitamins than the other powdered drinks, so we bring it despite the weight difference with Crystal Light. 02/03/2011 06:31PM Boonie--we still take Tang on every canoe trip. It is tradition for us. The orange drink we had on the first one wasn't very good, so Tang is an improvement, believe it or not. And did anyone notice (kanoes??) that one of our snacks was Space Food Sticks? I was so glad when kanoes posted that they are still available, as we plan to get some for next year's trip. I think our granddaughter will be most amused. :-) |

Even though it takes work to scan old photos - it's definitely worth it - I really enjoyed them. Your story has made me think a lot about our first trip (Ham Lake to Long Island). Even though I didn't keep a journal, I distinctly remember it as though it was yesterday. I'm thinking it's not too late to record these memories. Thanks for the inspiration to do this. |
