And 40 years later you're still tripping together! =)
Great report, but an even better STORY.

Great story and trip report, thanks for taking the time to find the notes and pictures. It is special that you have shared this memory.

Just keep adding more reports, please.

I'm working on one now from 1985. Scanning old photos is tedious.

Nice report! Makes me want to keep a journal so my grand-kids can read them in the future.

What a treat! It's like Christmas ornaments dipped in wax! :-)

My first trip was also in 1971, BTW. But my 2001 trip with Dave-O may be a closer analogy. :-)

Spartan1 -
What a great trip report - thanks so much for sharing your first journey. Even though it takes work to scan old photos - it's definitely worth it - I really enjoyed them. Your story has made me think a lot about our first trip (Ham Lake to Long Island). Even though I didn't keep a journal, I distinctly remember it as though it was yesterday. I'm thinking it's not too late to record these memories. Thanks for the inspiration to do this.

what a wonderful trip report and story!

I love the original details and prices and time checks... the story, well, it's one for the ages! I bet your son will cherish this report especially!
02/03/2011 03:10PM
He's heard it most of his life, so for him I think it's pretty ho-hum. :-)
02/03/2011 06:18PM
Wonderful report! And what a tent! And Tang! - the astronauts drank it! That was good enough for me.
02/03/2011 06:21PM
thank you for such a nice report
02/03/2011 06:23PM
Wow, That was a very nice report and story.
The part I like best is God does answer prayers.
Thank you both.

Boonie--we still take Tang on every canoe trip. It is tradition for us.

The orange drink we had on the first one wasn't very good, so Tang is an improvement, believe it or not.

And did anyone notice (kanoes??) that one of our snacks was Space Food Sticks? I was so glad when kanoes posted that they are still available, as we plan to get some for next year's trip. I think our granddaughter will be most amused. :-)

That was awesome! Thanks!

I noticed the space sticks thing. I first learned of them from Kanoe's post about them.

Spartan2 - I don't remember the last time I had Tang, probably somewhere around 1969 ;).

Does he have kids of his own yet? That story could never be ho hum :-)

I refuse to check the label, but am convinced it MUST have more vitamins than the other powdered drinks, so we bring it despite the weight difference with Crystal Light. Orange mustaches all around.

Yes, he has a delightful son who is 4 1/2 years old. Someday I am sure his son will love hearing the story, but he is too young right now to get the impact. ;-)

Well, BWP, because I have to prepare meals for an insulin-dependent diabetic with history of end-stage kidney disease, I have ALWAYS had to check the labels. FYI: Original Tang has 100% of your RDA of Vitamin C, 10% RDA of Vitamin A, Calcium, Vitamin E, Riboflavin, Niacin, and Vitamin B6 in an 8-ounce serving. Along with 40 calories, 9 grams of sugar. There used to be a sugar-free Tang (I don't know if there still is) but we tried it and we didn't like it.

We don't use a lot of artificial sweeteners as we aren't interested in eating chemicals. Spartan1 counts the carbs and has the sugar. He is slender so he can adjust his insulin accordingly and I NEVER drink (or serve) Tang except on a canoe trip.

Great trip report! Love the pictures and old time equipment that you had compared to today's modern luxuries!

Another enjoyable report! And let me tell you, I may have shrunk an inch or so from my former height of 6'2", but even at THAT height those "Steps" are friggin HIGH on that portage.

Another funny note. On our way "Out" this year, coming into Ham Lake we met a couple ladies whom were on their way back because they couldn't find the "Real" portage. Apparently, they were checking out the same one you'all were! Stated they decided there was no way they could portage THAT and said we "Saved" their trip by coming out on the "Right" portage just as they were paddling in. They were headed for Frost and I hope they made it!

I am enjoying all of your trip reports - they are fun to read! Brings back great memories of those earliest canoe trips in the BWCA/Quetico (also early 70's). Thanks for sharing!

Thank you. Ozarkpaddler pulled them up again after a long time, so it is sort of odd having them all up at the top together. ;-)

Very cool to look back that far in history. It sure was different back then. No sunscreen, no pfd's, canvas tent, and tang. I also noticed Neil's converse lowtops.

It's nice how the baby plans went perfectly too. Thanks for the write up. I enjoyed the old time pics too.

That's a gorgeous story! Thank you for posting this. It does me good to read something so positive.

Somehow I missed the original posting of this report so I am happy that it got pulled out of the shadows so I could read it!

Love all the old photos... such a great story to be able to tell your son.

It reminds me that we used to bring "russian tea" camping which was a mix of tang/tea/lemonade/spices. Might have to resurrect that recipe for the boys!

Sounds like you were quiet the trooper. Great old time report. Loved the picture of the old car, why didn't we put them old classics in storage? Think of what they would be worth now. I had a 1969 Dodge Charger Special Edition Limited Edition with the Hemi engine. Sure wish I had that car back. FRED

That was our first brand-new car. It had paisley-print vinyl on the top and also the upholstery trim, dark brown. (actually much richer and prettier than it sounds.) It was gorgeous, and to this day I remember it fondly!! :-)
