Joe,

Definitely can be done it a much smaller time frame. I think you could paddle from West Bearskin to Clearwater in a day if you so choose. Really it just boils down to how many (and how much time you need to sufficiently enjoy) of the side trips you'd want to try and squeeze in.

Did another trip to the area a couple years back if you're interested? Daddy daughter Duncan dayrrips

I first commented on this in 2015, it's been about eight years, and I still really want to do this trip. Paul, could the entire trip be done in 3 days? 4 days?

Joe

For those looking for a definitive description on how to locate the big cedar tree near lower Johnson falls, look here

Joe,

The portages were difficult (as far as BWCA portages go) but, considering that we did many of them as day trips - that saved us from the exertion of having to haul all our gear across. Still, I wouldn't let the difficulty dissuade you. As I mentioned in the trip, we traveled at a very deliberate pace. A more ambitious crew could have done this trip in far fewer days. So, no we weren't whipped when getting back to camp.

I believe many of the lakes on this route do not harbor walleye. And,I don't recall bringing the poles across the lakes I know that do (Caribou, Little Caribou, Pine & perhaps Rose Lake might as well??? ) Check the DNR Lakefinder. I'd focus on Caribou for walleye.

Thanks for the nice comments!

I have to bump this back to the top here for a second. Thanks for the wonderful trip report. I am completely enthralled with this route and am thinking about taking it in the future, sometime soon before a forest fire starts and ruins everything view-wise.

Did you think this route was pretty aggressive? I know the report said the portages were hard. Were you completely smoked when you got back to camp after some of those day trips, the Rose Lake overlook and Johnson Falls trips specifically?

I know you're a trout guy but was there any walleye fishing in the area that you know of?

TB - I always enjoy reading your trip reports - especially this one as I read it on a cold and snowy day in Chicago. Your report brought me back to the Northwoods - to the sounds of the water and crackling campfire. Thanks for taking me along on your journey!

super report and what a great canoe trip!!
i have never been to the east end of the park because of all the portages between those small lakes but i can see a late season trip when things are quiet would make a good 10 day solo.

Thanks, TB for another well-written and illustrated trip report. They are always a pleasure to read, although I have had to read this one in installments due to restraints on my available time, rather than straight through as I would have preferred. I'm sure you and Vickie enjoyed a welcome change of pace.

quote DrBobDg: "Hey...thanks for the trip report.
Looked like you lucked out temp wise.
Coffee....I am sure you have heard Jaystrokes camp coffee song? Trip is over when the coffee is.
I have hever have been in that neck of the woods....I was trying to guess what canoe do you guys use to give it that name?
thanks

It's a Bell Seliga tripper. there's no fascinating story, nor am I a rabid 'Pirates of the Caribbean fan. Quite simply, my buddy @ myself usually name our canoes based on their color. (ex. SILVER bullet, RED Bell pepper)
