We'll start this month off with a rock...just a plain old grayish rock...

until the setting sun's golden rays hit it, it transformed into a much more interesting subject.

That is fantastic.

Mt. Daniel in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, July 2017. While I don't live in Washington anymore, I love looking back at these pictures and planning future hiking trips out there.

A fairly well known rock, presumably randomly dropped from a glacier thousands of years ago, and there it has stayed. Somewhere between Polly and Malberg Lakes:)

Rocks, rocks and more rocks. Another fairly well known spot, the rockslide on the western end of Brule Lake.

This is from a marsh near my parent's house in Washington a few years ago. I took it from up in a tree. The marsh was frozen over pretty solidly, which rarely happens in our part of Washington.

sometimes i just get some good shots. recently i pressed something on my camera and now it's a big mess. i don't know what i did and don't want to revert to factory settings. so, i haven't been taking many photos lately.

Lindy - nice spiderwort shot!

Mocha - Bummer on the camera setting... what kind of camera is it and what is it doing? Maybe someone on the board can help figure out what got changed.

It was with my D500 and a Nikon 18-300 lens. Taken on Little John Lake in early June last year. It is hard when you are solo as you have to paddle, drift and get a few shots paddle some more. This pair kept going back and forth and it is a fine line between getting to close and spooking them and not getting close enough. Then having them swim in front of some nice contrasting background. Like most good shots, there are 50 or more you throw away. Goldeyes can be hard to not blow out the whites, Here is the last shot in the sequence, not as sharp nor did I get it framed right.

GREAT pics Mocha! Pileated woodpeckers are SO hard to get a picture of. They seem to know when I DON'T have a camera?

OK, hobbydog, my last January photo is another hidden animal....the big bad bear:

Was it a big bear or a cub that momma hid?

I saw something stick its head up out of the hay field as I drove by, then disappear. By the time stopped and got across the ditch I couldn't find it. I was thinking it was a fawn. Then I saw a little movement. To my surprise it was a calf elk. He let me walk right up to him. When the shutter went off he was up and running with his ears on backwards.
