We lost our dog on Thursday, September 17th, on the portage between Kiskadinna and Muskeg Lakes. This is about 4 miles south of the Gunflint Trail and about a half-mile east of Long Island Lake.
Eden is a Tibetian Terrier (not a true terrier, that's just the breed name), black and white, about 25 pounds. She was wearing an orange Outward Hound life preserver. She has a collar and nametag with our phone numbers. She has a microchip.
We did not see her leave the portage trail, but she must have done. This was her third BWCA trip, and until now she always ran up and down the trail, making sure that Big Boss and Ladyboss were still on the trail and staying together.
We searched on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. We had to leave today. If you should find her, please bring her out and leave her with the Arrowhead Animal Rescue or any vet in Grand Marais, and contact us on FB or at 978-831-2598. We will share our good news when she is found!

Contact these people. A few years ago they were successful at finding and capturing a shy lost dog that was lost then found in the BWCA then lost again.
Remember every lost dog deserves a chance to be found. Don't give up.

Edit...
I would also contact every outfitter and Ranger Station and business in the area if you haven't done so already.

Wow, I could never move on not knowing my pups fate. Leaving a smaller dog in that area is pretty grim. Was your dog an animal like squirrel chaser? Even they don’t go that far... I’m sure you did your best. I hope for a miracle.

Did you happen to leave a jacket or shirt in that area for her to return to? If not, I would go back and do jut that. Twice in my 40 years of dog ownership that old trick paid off for dogs lost to wicked storms or game chasing.

I found this post from the dog's owner on FB - contains a bit more info.....
"Please pray for us. My parents were camping in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota, and our dog Eden went missing while they were on a portage this Thursday. She’s never run off the trail before. My parents looked and called for her, but had to go back to camp for the night. They went back and stayed and looked for her the next day, but she didn’t come back. They left notes in clearly marked ziplock baggies in four campsites so that other campers who come through could keep an eye out for her. Unfortunately, she’s a very shy/timid dog, and she usually tries to hide from people she doesn’t know. We are scared for her, but we are hoping and praying that she will find her way to someone who will bring her out and we can be reunited. She’s chipped and had her collar on when she went missing. If anyone has any advice for what to do in this situation, we would be beyond grateful. #LookingforEden
*Edit - many people have asked - she went missing on the portage between Kiskadinna and Muskeg Lakes."
In addition, the family was camped on Long Island Lake, and day tripped over to Musk/Kisk.

Second this!
We have been doing dog rescue and have fostered over 100 puppies and dogs over the last 15 years or so. Wish I could drop everything and head up there to help look. I keep checking back here hoping for some good news.
Has the family contacted the nearby outfitters? Thinking of Tuscarora Lodge and Rockwood in particular. They could certainly help get the word out to groups heading out to keep their eyes open or get information if a group coming back might have seen Eden.

Definitely contact the Retrievers.
I'm the guy mentioned who lost his dog a couple years ago. She was in the BWCA for two weeks, then rescued, then got loose in Ely for two more weeks. The Retriever ultimately caught her and reunited us.
Don't give up hope. I never thought I'd see my dog again.
Feel free to contact me if you want more details.

That breaks my heart. I wish I had some PTO, I would run up and search.
A neighbor lost their little dog, and it ran towards Lake Elmo, which is less populated. They eventually set a live trap and caught their dog. Someone had seen it sunning on a bail of hay so they had an idea where to set the trap. It was a small, timid dog that would run if anyone approached it. Trapping it was their best chance.
We lost a golden retriever in Isle, MN for half a day. It was a terrible feeling. My heart goes out to you.
Thanks for the shirt idea. My dog loves to sleep in my dirty clothes. I will remember that if I ever lose a dog.

I pulled a permit for Cross Bay Lake on Saturday and will head down to Musk/Kisk portage to look for a few days. If anyone wants to come join me - please do! I have coordinated with the family and the search coordinator from Retrievers. Wish me luck.

Any updates on Eden?
Even when I'm hating this, I absolutely love it!

We did this portage just days before Eden was lost and have been hoping for a good outcome. What great news! What an intrepid pup and what fine humans getting involved. Hooray!

This was one of the first stories I read last week after completing an EP #14 trip...broke my heart. To see that Eden has been found is great news. I hope we hear the (long version) story of how the pooch was rescued. Way to go BW folks!

Great news! Amazing! Very happy for the owners.

So glad Eden was found! My dad and I was on the portage when she went missing, and we have been wondering if she was ever found. We were happy to see signs posted in the area several days later when we got off the water, and was hoping for the best. So happy for Eden and her family! I know they will be super excited to see her.

WOW! I spent so much time worrying about this dog out there alone. I just went for a night hike in the cold air and thought about her alone in the woods the whole time! I checked the messageboards specifically to see if she had been found. Honestly, I did not think she would make it.
GREAT NEWS and so happy for the owners!!!!! I think we all needed this story to have a happy ending.

Sooooo happy for Eden and her family. I can't imagine what the past 12 days have been for any of them. Hats off to the many people involved in looking for Eden, watching out for her, sending positive mojo, not giving up!!!!

I am a dog lover and it is a great relief to me that Eden was found by a family that knew how to win the trust (food is always good, the nose knows) of a dog. Since this story broke, Eden has been on my mind. I would love to know more details of the finding.

Yay! So glad to hear it! This has been haunting me. I took that portage with my dog this summer, and the what-ifs have been swirling around in my head. I often leash my dog on portages but not on that laurentian beast of a hill-climb. Refreshing this page daily. So glad for Eden and for her family. Kudos to her rescuers!

Super happy! I know someone was going to go out last weekend and look for her in that area. Not sure when the news broke or if they went.
Super happy the family was able to entice her in and knew to bring her out with them! They rock! Man they must feel good about what they did now knowing the whole story. They should!

Just saw the update on the Superior Hiking Trail page on Facebook and was SO HAPPY for you guys. My heart ached at the pain and worry you guys must have gone through, and the worry that Eden must have gone through - tramping through mud and bogs, avoiding wolves and other predators and not knowing where you guys were.
What an amazing adventure Eden must have been on, and I'm so glad Eden was found safe!
