The ability to look for a site quickly and cruise the lake for several hours if needed should give you the best chance for a site. I would start by 9:00 and would expect to find a site by noon or so. Not all sites are equal and you may have to go for one not as large as you might prefer.
the greatest come backs are reserved for those with the greatest deficits.

You’ll find a site, just maybe not a nice one. I paddled onto Sag from the west the Saturday before Memorial Day and found the site on Gold Island open. There was a crummy site nearby also open but everything else around there was taken.

I don't want to throw a monkey wrench into your plans, but walleye fishing on Sag, in recent years, has not been very good for us. My son just got back from a week on Sag, stayed at the Seagull Outfitters big Sag cabin and had a Gunflint guide for a couple of days. Only one walleye and got their limit of Lake Trout, one day.
I don't have any idea what the problem is with the Walleye fishing. Maybe it has something to do with the flea beetle infestation. I suspect some still have success. Up to about ten years ago, we caught Walleyes on Sag, but since then the fishing has steadily declined. I know the Gunflint guides still like to take their clients there. Maybe we should ask then about the fishing. With its connection to the Quetico, Sag is a very large body of water. Not very likely that it is fished out.
I believe that Mocha has been fishing Sag recently. It will be interesting to see how she fared.

We were in sag in a motorboat this past Sunday and could have had our pick of many open sites. This was Sunday morning. We had lunch on the nice beach site on the southern tip of Gold island and had a nice swim. Nobody around.
The hot weather has really slowed down the walleye fishing. The guys in the cabin next to ours had a great day one day getting out for the early bite. The walleye window was like 6-8am and then dead until around dark. 6-8 for, leech and slip bobber. We inquired about a guide and they were all booked at our outfitters. They said their guys were not doing well in the heat either.
