That’s terrible news. I live in Conroe, just east of Montgomery where this man was from.

The article said he was reported missing sf 11:24 pm. I wonder what time he went out paddling?

Very sad. Be careful out there, folks. That water is barely liquid.

Thoughts and prayers for his family.

Mickeal, who also went by Mickeal as a username, was an early member of the site. He started posting in 2006.

He noted this would be his 7th opener on Seagull.

So awful to read this. It’s a stark reminder that accidents don’t just happen to the inexperienced. Be safe everyone.

I wondered if it was the member with same name. Condolences to family and friends.

That’s very sad. Condolences to family and friends. I remember some of his posts on BWCA.com.
I found a nice bent shaft paddle floating below Seagull Falls Monday Morning. Not the one in photo but same length I think. Hadn’t been in water long.
I reported the find to Cook County MN Sheriff and they will let me know what to do with it.
His family would want it if it’s his I think.

So sad. Thoughts and prayers to his friends and family.

I enjoyed the interactions that I had with him on this board.

It can happen to anyone as he was a very experienced paddler.

Profoundly saddened by this news. Such a stark reminder of how things can change in an instant. My condolences go out to his family and friends. Due to this story I’m postponing my solo trip from this Friday to the middle of June. Cold water temps, cold front, and wildfire smoke descending on the BWCA all converging this week are enough signs for me. I’ll remember Mickeal on future trips. I’m so sorry for his loss.

Terrible news. Condolences to his family. Please be extra careful when the water is cold, you only have a few minutes before your muscles cease being functional this time of year, and a life preserver won't save you.

Such a sad tragedy and a reminder that we are all vulnerable.

So sad, this hits really close to home.
When I started this thread, I had no idea that Mickeal was a member.

RIP, and may the winds be forever in your back.

Perhaps someone with a little more computer Savy than myself could post some of Mickeals info on this websites sub-forum. "Those who have paddle past"

Different threads you find on Mickeals shows he was an experienced canoer. Also sounds like a great guy I would of liked to meet.

"This will be my 7th opener on Seagull. I go for the trout and walleye. Like what Shock said, west side. In late season I have jigged off the bottom in 70 foot of water".

Man that is so sad!

Said he was seen with a flotation device so I’m assuming the cold water was the issue! They also found him pretty quickly which would imply a flotation device!

Such a bummer!

Really sad to hear about this. Makes one curious to know exactly what happened. Could have been any number of things really. Heart attack, accidental flip with cold water, or even getting pulled into a rapid. I always wonder if there's something to be learned.

Not saying it would have necessarily helped in this case but this is precisely why I'm planning to bring a drysuit for my solo trip on Brule Lake this weekend. Got it for paddling lake Superior and to me it makes total sense to use it early season on any cold water.

Ugh. Rest In Peace fellow paddler.

I wanted to mention that following a recent local drowning I had some luck by contacting a local news station and saying "you have a perfect opportunity to deliver a safety message" and I ended up getting interviewed and developing a relationship with a reporter who may well be involved in future incidents. It may have helped a tiny little bit.

I'm also passionate about trying to learn and create some "good" from tragedies. There have been way too many "body found" news articles lately.

,so sad , prayers for his family,

With Seagull just being ice-out , PFD or not a person will have about 180 seconds to get out and start a fire. been there done that on the same lake , me & my son were lucky and had help from our other 2 paddlers.
i'm just stunned , I know you loved your spring trip to the BWCA. R.I.P. Mick !
