A "heads-up" for all of you Dorothy Molter historians and fans: The MN History Theatre will be presenting this show , "The Root Beer Lady" starting January 25th and running through February 23rd.

In 1986 on my very first trip to the BWCA, I was fortunate to meet and get a photo with Dorothy during her last summer there. That photo of the guys and me (far right in the Kerkhoven, MN t-shirt and with curly hair--back when I still had hair!) is going to be featured in the program for this play.
Three of us from that trip--one of whom I have not seen since then--are going to meet in St. Paul, MN to catch the final scheduled performance of this play. Pretty cool and really looking forward to it!

This is a neat place! in reading more about the performance, it is 90 minutes with no intermissions! crazy.

What a great story! So cool you are going to the play, and with your old pals! I saw the production in Ely a few years back, and it was wonderful! I wish I could have met her. She's a hero for sure!

Went to the performance at the History Theatre in St Paul last night, Friday, January 31. The solo performer, Kim Schultz, does a very good job (she also wrote the script). She really captured the attraction the BW has for so many people.

The 90 minutes passed fast. It did not need an intermission.

I would recommend it to anyone who has done any paddling in the BW.

Saw the play today--the final show for this run--and really enjoyed it! I will agree that Kim Schultz, the woman who wrote the play and protrayed Dorothy, did a great job in capturing some of the BWCA magic and transferring it to a stage. Granted, there was some "imagining" done (as Ms. Schultz put it) regarding the specifics of Dorothy's experience there but you still got a good idea of who this woman was and what life was like for her out on the Isle of Pines.

I briefly chatted with Kim Schultz after the play, suggesting that this production would be an excellent fit for Ely's Historic State Theater. She said that while no plans are in place for that, the play WILL be part of this summer's season for Theatre Le'Homme Dieu in Alexandria, MN. Catch it if you can!

Also really fun was to pick up a copy of the playbill and see our group in the picture I posted earlier in this thread. That was pretty cool! Was also quite interesting to see in this same playbill a picture of actress Julia Roberts before she was famous with her group of fellow teen-age canoeists pictured with Dorothy when they visted her island in the early 1980's. I understand this same photo is on display at Dorothy's museum in Ely.

I will be back out to the Isle of Pines this summer and am now looking forward to the trip more than ever!

And...MikeinMpls, my buddy was amused by your "Luke Wilson" observation. You're not the only one who has now seen the photo and also sees that resemblance!

What a great experience then and now. Historic, in fact. Just wonderful
