prettypaddle,
That is a great shot! Cllcanoe, I love that spot. That's my green paint on the back left rock! cericdahl, That's not the first, nor will it be the last canoe donated to that stretch of rapids. It tempts many. I'm glad I don't have to be a judge. This is going to be a great set of photos!

Hello canoehat,
I have been very busy with work and home remodeling lately and haven't been writing much. I do read the forum often but wish I could spend more time. We are going in at Sawbill in 13 days so I have been getting spooled up.

I only know one person in the world named Trygve, and I worked with him 12 years ago at the NSC. Is that you, by chance?
Glad to hear Superior North has survived to paddle another day.

Thank you prettypaddle, and the same to you. Awesome photo!
The day I took that picture turned out to be a beautiful sunny day after the fog lifted -- the best one of the whole trip.
This month's contest will be a tough one to judge! Great pictures from everyone.

Just some incredible photos this month. (the sun-burned foot shot is slightly off-topic and a little disturbing - but a very nice composition none the less)

Howard Spraque, we've stopped at that same site for lunch more times than I can remember. We were actually up there the week that big (now dead) pine went down. We ate under it when we went in and stopped to find it down on our way out. It probably lived about 8 more years after tumbling over.

H. Sprague- really, I haven't been by there in about 3 years now. Glad to hear it's still kicking,. I think it went down in 1993 if memory serves me. Just trying to remember who I was traveling with that trip. i think 93 though.

Barley - 1993. Yourself, Moose Plums, me and "Close Shave" Dave. A nice memory lying there on that beach. Thanks Howard.

Stubs - It was a strange experience. With nothing to focus on, we got almost a feeling of vertigo. We kept the canoe headed in as straight a line as we could, and miraculously, we came out on the other side of Nina Moose right at the beach in HowardSprague's photo.

I'm glad, that some of the best photographers in this contest have already won this year. It might be a runaway for uncle moose, and snakecharmer. However this is the best group of photos I have seen, while on bwca.com.

Portage Monkey - The camera is a Canon digital SLR (11MP, 1Ds model). This picture was taken on a tripod using a graduated neutral density filter. The filter is basically a piece of transparent plastic that's split into a clear half and a darkened half. By moving the positioning of the filter over the lens, you can do things like darken an overly bright sky while still keeping the foreground nice and bright. Using this filter on a sunset scene like this allows me to keep color in both the sky and foreground (like our own eyes would normally see). Ordinarily without this filter, the camera's own limitations in how it captures light would either cause the sky to go white or the foreground to go dark. This may help account for the even color. I also process most of my photographs with photo editing software, so that helps too.
Taking pictures is usually one of our main pastimes, so my wife and I bring lots of photography gear. (To make room for it all, we don't bring a lot of other extra stuff). Needless to say, it helps a lot to have all this gear with us (multiple lenses, filters, flashes, etc...).

Okay, I already entered one picture but I have another I like even better, so I "withdraw" my previous entry (although it's still posted above) and submit this one instead. :-) Picture taken May 1, 2006, on the third day of a four-day loop from Mudro through the Basswood River. We saw no one in this popular area the whole trip, given that it was so early in the season. This will probably go down as one of my favorite short trips of all time. This picture was taken on the last "unofficial" portage going up the Horse River. As we portaged it started to rain, and I love the way this picture captures the rain and the light through the Spirit II.

WOW!! a ton of REALLY good photo's so far. If I were one of the moderators having to pick from this I'd feel true pain in choseing. This is the best group of photo's I have seen since joining bwca.com over half a year ago.

It does look remarkably similar Navigator. I know that we were camped in the Northwest most campsite just before the portage to Koma. There were a lot of little channels just across from our site and thats where I took that shot.

FYI-With a couple of voting moderators on trips as well as out of town, the June winners will be announced next week. This was a great group of pictures this past month. It made voting for a winner especially tough!

Tom I always tell people my unbiased opinion, that this is the best bwca site on the web (and I have seen many) Not only because of the many features, but the very freindly people.

Winner of the June photo contest goes to Crusty! Congratulations. We apologize for the delay. A couple of vacations and a plethora of great photos to consider made this a tough month but enjoyable month.
The second hat goes to Canoe Dude.
BigZig is the winner of the June trip report contest.
