Thanks, and yes we did. In fact, I had rotator cuff surgery in October and I am still mending. This is likely to further limit what I can do on my next Q trip. But what the heck, its great dreaming and planning. Jerry

This is a great report. Can someone provide the location of "The Walk Through The Woods" portage?

SJ, it is at the very end of moose bay on the south side of Saganagons. It can be hard to initially locate because a newer beaver dam has blocked the view and direct access. To find it, canoe to the very end of the bay and continue on a marshy creek about 10 feet wide until you eventually come to a beaver dam with a small stream flowing through it. This is a high dam of several feet and when sitting in a canoe you cannot see over it and it looks like the end of the road. Climb up on the dam and you should look to about 11 O'clock. There you will see a rough landing some 50 of so yards across the beaver pond. Paddle to this spot and you can then easily see the logging road wending uphill toward Saganaga. Alternatively, you can canoe down the bay until you almost reach the end with a small island on the right side. cut over to the right shore and follow it carefully until you see a rough portage landing. There are aluminum canoes cached here as well. This is an alternative path/trail that connects to the main portage by circumventing the beaver pond. It is a good 30 rods or so to do this alternative trail and the path is rough and muddy. You are better off climbing over the beaver dam and hoisting your gear over it and then continuing to the landing. Best, JerryG

Thanks for the link. So this is a well marked portage? Also, I notice on my National Geographic map that there is a mapped road that this portage/old logging road crosses. Did you see this?

You'd definitely have to take a tow boat from that spot - can you imagine that open water crossing with Sag in her usual mood? Man.

SJ, yes, I did see the logging road. There is evidence of various logging activity along portions of the portage. Yet, the road you mention is very grown in and somewhat open, it is easy to see that no one uses this old logging trail because it is so overgrown. I think this road was about halfway in approximately. We kept looking for the right turn we knew we had to make, but this old road is clearly not it. JerryG
