Solo Trip 2011 (EP14) (151 photos)
103 No Fly
To speed up my take down in the morning, I decided to leave the fly off the tent. I had no idea what that would mean for me that night...
102 Plenty of Wood
Once again, I was blessed with plenty of ready wood at this campsite. I was sure to gather more while hiking around, so that the next camper would have it just as good.
101 Upper Pauness Campsite
Coming into my final campsite, on the afternoon of the fourth day. Beautiful weather, and beautiful color. The change between my entry day and today was noticeable.
100 Calm Rapids
Approaching the portage (and, normally, rapids) between Lower Pauness and Upper Pauness.
099 Color Across Lower Pauness
Looking to the western shore of Lower Pauness Lake.
098 Beaver Dam and Color
Lower Pauness Lake.
097 Running Moose
Once I set down the canoe, it took off running. Lower Pauness Lake.
096 Second Moose
It was the second moose of the trip. Traveling solo has its benefits (less noise).
095 Another Surprise
Take a look on the right, near the beaver lodge...
094 Lower Pauness Landing
The west end of the portage trail from Shell to Lower Pauness Lake. The low water level had me setting in far out into what would normally be the river.
093 Low Clearance
About 20 rods from the Lower Pauness landing, this deadfall was caught on a young tree. I reported it to the LaCroix Ranger Station once out of the wilderness, so their crews could clear the hazard.
092 Portager's View
A view from under the canoe. On the portage from Shell Lake to Lower Pauness Lake (heading east).
091 Colors
Color on the trail. On the portage from Shell Lake to Lower Pauness Lake.
090 Climbing Again
Up out of the wetland, and back into the woods. On the portage from Shell Lake to Lower Pauness Lake (heading east).
089 Long Boardwalk
Long boardwalk on the portage from Shell Lake to Lower Pauness Lake (heading east).
088 Bonus Lake
Along the portage trail to Lower Pauness, there's a small wetland lake. Perhaps I'll set my canoe in for a bit of fishing on my next trip.
087 On the Trail
Along the trail from Shell Lake to Lower Pauness Lake.
086 Small Orange Fungus
Another orange fungus near the mini puffballs.
085 Mini Puffballs
I've always been fascinated by fungii. On the portage trail from Shell Lake to Lower Pauness Lake.
084 Shell Portage Landing
This was the landing in Shell for the portage to Lower Pauness. Low water was the theme of the week.
083 Not Skunked
It wasn't a big fish, but it was nice to bring in. I released it because I did not want to haul it over the upcoming 216 rod portage.
082 Distant Shore
My path directs me west between islands and toward shore.
081 Color on Shell Lake
Traveling across Shell Lake while trolling with a ShadRap.
080 Rock Island II
Looking back across the feature. At normal water levels, most of the stones would appear to be sitting just about on top of the water.
