Solo Trip 2011 (EP14) (151 photos)
079 Rock Island
This feature caught my eye as soon as I passed over the portage.
078 Holding on to Life
Amidst the dying vegetation, some plants were clining to life. On Shell Lake.
077 The Entry to Shell Lake
Coming into Shell Lake on the portage trail from Little Shell Lake.
076 Shell Rapids
The narrows between Shell and Little Shell lakes (facing east).
075 Ready for Travel
Canoe loaded and ready on the morning of the fourth day. Little Shell Lake.
074 Waning Light
Mists dancing on the water in the waning light of day.
073 Ready for Evening
Camp on Little Shell Lake.
072 A Peek Inside
Just a quick view of my tent, before my sleeping bag was unpacked and the rain fly was in place.
071 Little Tent in the Big Woods
The campsite on Little Shell had a tent pad set back into the trees--a real boon for those midsummer days, but better in the bug-free spring and fall.
070 Landing Pad
The low water level left a nice landing pad for pulling into the campsite on Little Shell.
069 Little Shell Camp
With a short paddle and two portages, I made camp early on the third day, on Little Shell Lake.
068 Muddy Landing
The portage landing on Lynx Lake (coming from Heritage Lake).
067 Devil in the Details
I lost a half hour searching for the portage trail at the end of this bay. I eventually found the trail--the landing was just left of the large rock on the left side of the photo. It was hiding in plain sight.
066 Detour
The water levels at the south end of Heritage were so low that I could not get to the portage trail. That left me either going back the way I came, or going into Lynx. Lynx sounded good to me.
065 Color on Heritage
Color behind a screen of evergreens on Heritage Lake.
064 Leave No Trace
The pad where my tent was sitting the night before. I do believe in minimizing the impact of my passing.
063 My Chariot Awaits
On this third day, my hope was to get moving a bit earlier, and to make my next camp a bit earlier, too.
062 Cooking Breakfast
A simple start to the day: hot water for oatmeal and tea (not pictured: pre-cooked bacon).
061 Fire in the Sky
Just one of those shots that captured my eye... Heritage Lake.
060 Timeless View
I could not help but reflect on how so many prior generations had seen sites like this one, while making their way across the north country. It was a moment that seemed to transcend time.
059 Rocky Shore at Dawn
Southern campsite on Heritage Lake.
058 Blue Shore
Just one of those quick shots that turned out to be striking. South campsite on Heritage Lake.
057 Blue Morning
A long exposure in the early light created a shift toward the blue end of the spectrum.
056 Dawn through the Tent Screen
The first photo of day three, taken from inside my tent (through the screen door).
