Solo Trip 2011 (EP14) (151 photos)

031 Through the Woods

On the trail between Heritage Creek and East Loon Bay (heading west).

030 New Growth

Signs of new life along the portage trail.

029 Granite Dome

Granite dome along the portage trail between East Loon Bay and Heritage Creek (heading west).

028 Looking South

Looking south along Heritage Creek. Low water, late in season.

027 Entering Heritage Creek

The east end of the portage from East Loon Bay to Heritage Creek. There's an 80' elevation different between the bodies of water, but more than a 130' climb going west to east (min. to max., not counting ups and downs).

026 Portage Beach

Sandy shores, looking north, at the portage from East Loon Bay to Heritage Creek.

025 Clear Water

Shallows near the portage to Heritage Creek.

024 Color on Little Loon

Morning color on Little Loon Lake.

023 Misty Morning - Little Loon II

Looking east on the morning of day two.

022 Misty Morning - Little Loon I

Looking WSW on the morning of day two.

021 Away it Goes

Spooked, it retreated into the woods along the north shore of Little Loon Lake.

020 Great Hearing

While the noise of my initial shots were masked by the settling brush, it heard the shutter from my second burst of shots.

019 Moose in the Morning

This photo doesn't do the moose justice. They are amzing and massive creatures (with spindly little legs).

018 Face to Face

I heard brush moving and was pretty sure I knew what was coming, but it was still a terrifying and wonderful experience, seeing it emerge from the brush.

017 Home Away

This is my trusty ALPS Mountaineering Extreme 3 with the outfitter floor upgrade. It is a bit heavy for solo trips, but it it will handle any weather and is nice and roomy (even for tandem trips).

016 Man's Other Best Friend

In the wilderness, fire is man's other best friend. I was glad that the bad had been lifted, and I was allowed to burn during the evening and into the night.

015 Relieved

Finally in camp as the daylight began to fade (with the sun beyond the western shore). I dawdled too long during the morning, and had to put on speed to get to the campsite before nightfall.

014 Freshwater Jellyfish

It was hard to get a good photo of the freshwater jellyfish. I was fatigued and yet heading to camp late in the day. One is visible in this phot (the white "spot" near the center). They were dime-sized, sometimes visible alone, and sometimes in dozens.

013 Water Disturbed

I was attempting to photograph some freshwater jellyfish, but ended up capturing only these ripples on the water.

012 Paddling Toward Little Loon

Looking north toward Little Loon from the far end of East Loon Bay.

011 Turning South

Turning toward Devil's Cascade on Lower Pauness Lake.

010 Lower Pauness

Looking across Lower Pauness, with early fall color.

009 Middle Pauness

A beaver dam coming out of the narrows on Lower Pauness (taken from the downstream side).

008 Pauness Rapids

Low water put the rapids between Upper and Lower Pauness lakes at a trickle.
