Woodland Caribou PP Ontario. The park is covered with Jack Pine which makes the fires a necessity to regenerate the forest. We used to fly into the western lakes of the park and paddle out toward Red Lake. In June 2013 we went into Buldging Lake via floatplane. The only way out is to paddle…. And portage. What we didn’t know was there was an ice storm in October 2012. The western portages had not been cleared yet. Spent the first 3 days cutting a way through. We were very glad to get halfway and see they had cleared some of the portages through a 4-5 year fire area. We made it back to work on time 10 days later.

Difficulty Rating: Rating 10, due to length (17,280 rods) and elevation change. It's all down hill on the way out.
Maintenance Rating: Rating 5, well maintained.

I love that sign! I think it (or something similar--or at least SOMETHING) needs to be at the new "official" start off of 61. All you'll see on 61 are the little green hwy. signs east and west of the Hwy. 61/Co. Rd. 12 intersection. There is the rock cairn sign just north of 61 but you REALLY have to look hard to see anything Gunflint Trail. There is the big sign on the water tower but by then you are already way up the hill.

To me, the sign in your photo is iconic, inviting and says "Adventure awaits!"
