Great trip report - really enjoyed reading it - and the photos were fantastic! In 15 years of BWCA trips, we've never encountered a bear - just a lot of pesty mice and squirrels. After reading your trip report - we'll never camp at a site with fish remains!
Hope you enjoyed your trip -- it looks like you had some great campsites.
Thanks for sharing!

The Bear episode was interesting,I have never ran into a Bear in the BWCA. Nice pictures enjoyed your Trip report. I drive from Northern Indiana and it takes around eleven hours. Where in Michigan are you driving from?

Glad the bear did not ruin your trip. Too bad you did not have the camera handy. Thank oyu for posting the pics and report. Helps me remember my trip.

Loved the trip report. Never had to deal with a bear like that and I hope I never have to. Too bad the trip got cut short one day. But things could have been worse.

Nice report.
Love the canoes, are they the osprey design? looks like stitch and glue construction. Where did you get the plans?

What an adventure! Thanks for sharing.
I have a friend who is taking his family to Smoke and Burnt lakes right now. I hope they don't run into your bear friend!

nice trip report sheeres-appreciate it! at one point i couldn't tell if the bear had grabbed the foodpack or it was kevin (i think-whichever one of you screamed:)) running with the pack playing keep away from the bear. i love the image of walking out into the woods to inspect the damage only to come across the sleeping bear-lol!

I really enjoyed the report and the pics...and really enjoyed the mental picture I got of the fella on the throne when he encountered the bear. Not good to be bare when encountering a bear. Thanks again.

Awesome Reading about your trip. The Bear part was fascinating.
We are going on the same loop in August.
We were going to run up to Cherokee, base camp and then come down South temperance and around back to Sawbill.
Hope we don't find your furry friend...that would freek me out.

Great trip report. Beautiful pictures. I was up with a group of 3 the same time. We came into Burnt the day you were packing and heading to Kelly. Your site was on our list to check, glad we passed!
We stayed at the Southern site on Burnt and heard alot of hollaring and yelling Sunday night from that direction. "We've got two of them" was all I could make out. Sounds like your Bear came back and brought a friend. Our ears were tuned into the forest that night.
We talked to another group on Smoke that had a Bear wander into their camp. Sounds like an active area.

sheeres: Nice report. Glad you didn't let Yogi interfere with the rest of your trip. So was that site with the bear on Burnt #924 from the maps section? We are possibly heading up to that area mid August. probably would want to avoid that site.

I've been to the BW over 2o times never seen a bear til last trip 2 yrs ago. Guess what.........same area where your bear was. We were in the tent for the nite and could hear him rustling thru the fire pit and around the shoreline and tent. He let us alone after some whistle blowing and yelling. Next day we could see where he laid down for a nap. That bears home is Sawbill area, have read other stories about bear in the area. Tweo more weeks and will be heading out of Big Sag...
