Figured a light, fluffy post could be fun.
What is your favorite time of day in the BWCA?
A.) Looking out over the foggy waters in the morning, birds chirping, everything with fresh dew enjoying some quiet and coffee? Inhale. Exhale.
B.) The mid-day enjoyment, and excitement of tripping, fishing, exploring or napping?
C.) The night time of the campfire, star gazing, northern lights, night cappin' with your favorite beverage, owl's hootin' and wolves howling?

My favorite is night time when the bugs have gone to bed and my son wakes me up because he has never seen the Milky Way before. That made the whole trip worth it.
However, the morning mist on the lake should not be missed.

The sun sets at home too. Why is it not the same?

No comparison I’m a night person, C is the best for me. End of the day relaxing with an adult beverage and a Cuban cigar watching your lighted slip bobber disappear while sitting around the campfire. Watching meteor showers, Milky Way, and stars is also fun at midnight.

Also hearing the sounds of the loons calling.

It doesnt matter if it is in the morning when the sun is just starting to peak over the tree tops
Or the middle of a hot scorching day
Or sitting by the fire as the last ray of sun light hides behind the trees
As long as I am up in the BWCA & not home, cutting the grass or some other project.

B So much to do around the base camp and good or perfect weather just adds to the enjoyment. If rainy, the to do list for inside activities changes to under a BWJ tarp or inside a tent. The 10x10 tarp then gets used also for a kitchen and all is good even in a rainy day.

The mornings when it is cool and still, hopefully the sun is shining, and I wake up on my own without an alarm. Can't wait to get that cup of coffee.
But then sitting in front of a campfire at night, again nice and cool and still, drinking hot chocolate or ? is just as nice. The sky is clear and you can see the stars.

Any time I am on the portage trail! I also like little, easy swifts. And, those areas where there are multiple tiny, mini-waterfalls with short portages around them.
As the poster above said, I also like night time the best, especially if the bugs are down and the full moon is up. Or, if there is no moon, and lots of stars-the Milky Way!!

I love A but I usually end up being a C which is just fine with me as well. The dilemma is that we trip in the first half of June and the days are just so long. If I am up to enjoy A, unless I take a nap during the day it's hard to enjoy C. And if I'm up to enjoy C I can all but guarantee I'll miss out on A the next morning. I've come to the conclusion that I just let the adrenaline rush of being in the BW take over and enjoy every possible minute I can!

No question for me, it is morning. Always was morning, always will be, even now when we just stay in a cabin. Something magical about those mornings, especially a misty one with a loon calling in the distance, and my cup of hot chocolate by my side, my camera in my hand.
I have always loved to start my morning with some quiet time alone. But if I can do it in the canoe country, that is heaven on earth.

Goldenbadger: "Definitely A. Bear (my canoe dog) and I are usually up before any of our tripping partners. Coffee brewed, gorgeous sunrise, solitude, Bear at my side. There’s nothing better. "
I'm picturing this...paddling by your site while you call for your dog who ran off in the woods. Not sure if I'd keep paddling or stop to help scare off the bear. Just kidding, I'd stop.

All of the above...
I love the morning with a hot cup of coffee and the lake is like glass. The birds are twittering & the red squirrels are scolding & hurling pinecones at you.
I love the afternoon & taking a long portage. When you get to the end of the last portage of the day & enter the lake you will hopefully find a campsite on.
I love twilight when the wind dies down & the colors of the sun going down reflecting on the lake are off the charts beautiful.
I love the late night campfire & smoke. Finding the sky so clear you can see the milky way & notice shooting stars or the ISS. Enveloped in total quiet except the crack of the fire & the hoot of the owls. The barred owl says...Who cooks for you...all.

1st is the morning magic hour. (the 1 hour before sunrise)
2nd is the evening magic hour. ( the 1 hour before the mosquitoes come out)
In both cases I'm usually fishing, watching the rising or setting sun, lake is a mirror, loons are calling, fish are jumping, might hear wolfs howling or grouse drumming, etc.
It's just magic!!

I'd like to say "C", in the evening, but I'm an early riser, usually up about 4:00 a.m., so after a handful of BWCA trips I've found I'm usually in the hammock by 10:00 p.m. Thus, I have to say "A".
My only shot at seeing the northern lights is when nature calls.

I gotta go with A myself.
Nothing beats a black cup of coffee in hand, looking over the quiet lake, maybe a ripple here or there, a loon in the distance, inhale, exhale, cozy my hands around the mug and drink it all in with all my senses.
Can't wait to get back up there!

Night. This last trip was something amazing. For some reason the sky was clearer than even usual- no moon I’m guessing is the culprit. I saw stars in a way ive never seen before- the sky was the most incredible I’ve ever seen. NOTHING beats that... and you can’t get that in very many places.

D. All of the above plus extra bonus for when the bugs are down and the walleye quotient is up haha

It’s funny you say that. He sticks to my side like glue, so I rarely have to call out for him. But I often wonder if nearby campers or canoers can ever hear me calling his name and wonder.

A....for example
I was guiding a group of very energetic 16 yr old girls last week for Gunflint Lodge.
They were seldom up before 8 am, so I rose before the sun and took advantage of the quiet mornings and ate breakfast on the lake shore.
Our final morning was on Horseshoe Lake. We had the site across from the portage to Caribou.
While I was eating breakfast in the stillness of the morning, I watched an eagle fly straight at me, and land in a big white pine directly above camp. We sat and looked at each other for a good 45 minutes until the rest of the group started to wake up one by one. Then he flew away. I wished at that moment that I could have joined him :)
