Georgiaboy, that's my nephew Dave catching the northern. He was an Army Ranger for 4 years and had gotten out not long before this trip. Dave has won awards for his sharpshooting in the state of Wisconsin. If he wants to pack a sidearm i'm all for it.
If I remember right he only shot one thing that entire week. A branch that him and his twin bro were trying to cut or chop and were having difficulty with. :)
That was his first northern he ever caught. He was really thrilled. Here's another shot but not for the contest.

September 17, 2000. Isabella River camp near Rice Lake
This was Dave's first canoe trip and our 4th night on the trail. Dave had fish in his veins. It was very early when I heard Dave unzip his tent. It was dark, and I figured he needed to take a leak. I waited to hear his return, but nothing. As a listened to the night, I could hear, whizzzzzzz, plop, silence, whizzzzzzz, plop.
What the heck is he doing? I followed the sound, and in the dark there was Dave in his Long Johns. Happy as a clam throwing jigs in "the creek" (as he called it).
Later, that morning he produced this prize outside my tent. Dave threw the fish back and I went back to sleep...... smiling (and I still do when I think of that scene)
In memory of Dave: 09/11/1946 - 11/26/2008. We will miss you.

I just enlarged a picture to find HPD in his skivies, in the dark, at the edge of a lake. I feel violated!
Good to see so many kids taking up the torch as well! Makes me feel more secure that we will have coming of age conservationists to defend our forests.
Who I am precedes what I do, not the other way around.

This was in the bay at the western side of Lynx Lake, around 10pm (July 6). I had a brand new 8-wt fly rod, and a fly my father tied and sent. My friend saw the calm water and bass jumping, and insisted I fish. This bay isn't more than 6 feet deep, so you can imagine my surprise when I quickly caught a 23" walleye. Nice way to break in the new rod. He was released unharmed.
