I heard the first loons today on the lake in my back yard! (Metro MN)

I cannot tell if they are the ones that will live here all summer or if they are headed north as the Lakes open up. But it is always a thrill to hear them and to know that another season of paddling is imminent.

What is your favorite sign of spring?

Robins singing. I'm not close enough to hear the loons.

I like that first warm rain, when you can smell the worms.

Love walking the dog, and the frogs are croaking.

My wife likes all the church flowers: Lily's, tulips, hydrangea's etc.

I like when all the clothing colors turn from black and gray to pink, yellow, baby blue, etc.

Love hearing the frogs in my pond! Some people think they are annoying. My wife and I love it.

I just started noticing these last year. Will have my eye out for more of them this year.

I love that sound too, but can't hear it from my house, have to walk to smaller water.

Lucky!

Favorite signs of spring:

1) Getting home from work in the daylight
2) When the sap starts flowing
3) When I smell things again while walking the dog

Had seen loons each time I paddled the St Croix in the last week, but yesterday was paddling home - having sighted zero - when one popped up within ten feet of the canoe. Loon was as surprised as I was and it immediately submerged again.

Dog really really wanted to pursue.

Jeepers peepers. They are loud now. We have loons here now in N Burbs if Chicago. Getting a song on my morning walks. So cool. They’ll be gone soon.
