The two in the books and reserved are a family stay at Rockwood at the end of July. Going to need it more than ever this year. And our yearly stay in Grand Marais for MEA weekend in October.
1. Yearly father/daughter trip will with big duckling happen, but the when and which EP will depend on what does or doesn’t happen with her soccer season.
2. Taking Bruin on his first father/son trip and we’ll just stay at an EP campground. Probably Sawbill or Kawishiwi. The when will also depend on what does or doesn’t happen to soccer for the girls. He’s 18 months old now so it will be very simple. Some exploring and short paddles.
3. Hoping to fit in a solo sometime. Will happen if no soccer season, but will be very tough to fit in if there is a soccer season,

My 2 boys, (ha, at ages 34 and 29 I love to still call them 'my boys') and I have plans for EP 14 going North on the LIS river to Pauness to Shell and then base camp in Lynx Lake on June 13th. I have been biting my nails waiting for good news to come down and I am hopefully reading that camp stoves are NOT part of the fire ban from another thread. If Lake Jeanette campground is closed I am not sure where we will spend the night of the 12th.
Our "plan B" was to pick up our canoes in Ely and camp the night of the 12th at Lake J which is right down the road from EP 14. "Plan A" was a trip to Lake Emerald in Quetico,,,,,,but almost ruled that out now.

June 10, Kawishiwi Lake was supposed to be father/son, but if we can go we'll all go together since all other plans were cancelled (two daughters and wife as well). We may capitalize and extend this trip if it is cleared in case our 2nd permit get's cancelled due to second wave, or whatever:
July 25, Moose River North->Mudro. The whole crew, 14-16 days, taking our time and enjoying Crooked.

First attempt at the MR 340 race, August 4-7, Kansas City to Saint Charles on the Missouri River. I will say we are participating, not competing. I’ll be plenty pleased just to cross the finish line before the 85 hour cut-off.

My brother and I are booked for a 5/17 fishing trip at entry #47 Liz lake. I’ve been checking here all day to see if there is any new news about the opening and fire ban. It would be bad to not be able to have a nightly campfire but no cook stove would be a deal breaker for us.

The plan is to start at EP 54 Seagull late July. While we've looked at maps, we don't really have a plan on where we'll go from there. We would like to make a big loop. We'll see how the weather etc is once we get into July.
Generally we try to get away from people, which I think will be hard to do on Seagull /Sag. My husband chose it because we have never been to that area, and we were hoping his brother would join us so we wanted the option of basecamping with few portages.

I guess I posted this too soon. I just got done reading this on the Covid board. Very bummed! I can’t believe they waited so long to make this decision. The false hope I was feeling made reading it even more crushing.

Maybe you can see if you can get a permit for a day or two later? I'm still holding out hope they remove the travel restrictions after the 18th...I think your permit will be refunded...

Not that easy. I was traveling from California and my brother from Massachusetts. I’m pretty flexible with my schedule but my brother has children and work commitments. I will contact him to see what he thinks.

August 25th, Quetico, Carp Lake entry point, 10-day permit. Hopefully, travel concerns will be over by then, the Canadian border will be open to US citizens, and the RABC process will be back in play. If not, we'll try again next year.

No need to be sorry! I just talked with my brother and Rockwood outfitters and we are rebooked for 5/18. I don’t get a chance to fish with my brother very often with us living on different coasts.Very happy we can still do this trip! Now if they can only lift the fire ban!

East Bearskin 5/22. Planning on making the small loop up through alder to pine, over to caribou, and down through moon and deer back to bearskin. Taking it at a very leisurely pace so that we can do tons of fishing, spend some time exploring Johnson falls, and really just relaxing. Love spending Memorial Weekend in the boundary waters! Seems to be a real sweet time of year when the fishing is good and the bugs and crowds aren’t too bad yet. Just hope that the stay at home order isn’t extended again. Ive been counting down the days for this one for too long!

June 15 going in at 23 on Mudro, up to Horse for three or four days, back down to Mudro and out. Grandson and I . Fishing, pictos, wildlife (hopefully) waterfalls and just getting away from it all for a short while.

My fourth trip to the BWCA begins Sep 13th at ep 24 fall lake. Planning on fishing Basswood for 2 weeks at what should be an interesting/awesome time of year. Pipestone, Jackfish, Frog, Hoist, Back Bays - I can't wait to check them all out and add lots of knowledge plus a fish story or 2 to my personal bwca lore. I am taking a friend that is a complete newbie (Never even camped before) so it should be interesting, Ray worked with me in Alaska for years and is one of those guys that when you see what he ties to the end of his line you think "No freakin way thats gonna work!" - right up until you are netting his catch and thinking "How do fish that dumb grow that LARGE?".
Tight lines, screamin drags and SAFE and FUN Adventures to all this summer!!!

One of these days, I'll be going to a local lake in Maine. I expect I'll be the only one on it as Maine has a lot of lakes and few people. I've paddled it twice, but this time, I'll fish it as it has white perch and brook trout and I'm hungry for fresh fish.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

Since overnight camping is not an option, we will staying at Kawishiwi Lodge and doing day trips to fish for the opener.

Can you pack my daughter along when you leave DC ( she's in Alexandria) and drop her off anywhere in WI ? She's very petite and wouldn't take up much room :). I have a feeling she won't be making a summer trip home this year.

Already missed out on April trout fishing trip in SE MN, had 17th permit for Duncan. Re booked 18th trip out of Baker and hoping it's a go, should know by late next week I guess. If that doesn't work I am going to book a cabin on a lake somewhere and get the heck out of here for awhile.
05/08/2020 08:11AM
We have a reservation for a cabin at Rockwood Lodge for mid-June. Anna (granddaughter) is on the fence about going now: she feels Spartan1 and I are too high-risk to be out and about, and having to get up there and back with at least one hotel stay each way, having to eat take-out or drive-thru only, etc. makes it a complicated trip. She is a science geek, wants to be an epidemiologist (something she has said since Jr. High School, so not in reaction to the pandemic.) It may be hard to convince her to go. We have a "plan B", which is to spend a week together at our lake cottage in southwestern Michigan. Can still have fun, campfires, canoeing, paddle boat, play games together. Not the same as northern Minnesota, no loons, no forest; but it has its own charm.
But that is bittersweet. She has been going to the canoe country with us since she was four years old, and she is seventeen now. Headed off to college in the fall. Who knows if there will ever be another trip?
It's nice to say, "There's always next year", but when you are looking at your 75th birthday in a few weeks. . .who knows?

My 5th trip since 2013 putting in a Lake 1 then ENE through Insula, up the Kawishiwi to Little Sag then NW through Gabi to South arm of Knife catching Eddy Falls and Thunder point and then exiting at 25 on Moose. 3rd week of July. Got a great crew going with my 26 y/o son who guided for the Boy Scout 3 years and did volunteer trail work with the Forest Service, one of my former Boy Scouts who also guided and did Forest Service work there, as were as 3 virgins to the BWCA , 2 friends of my son and and long time friend of mine who was a Scout with me back in the 70's. As always, can't wait.

Hopeful for a mid-July solo. Bunkhouse at Tuscarora Outfitters with breakfast, safe parking and a shuttle to Trails End. Entry #55, Saganaga 7/13 for 10 days. Heading west to Knife, southeast to Ogishkemuncie, Gabemichigami and Little Saganaga. Then headed east through Tuscarora exiting through Missing Link to Round or through Copper, Snipe, Cross Bay and Ham to Cross River Access.

May 23rd (hoping like heck anyway) Entry Point 25 for 8 days. Heading to South Arm of Knife to basecamp, then daytrips to Cherry, Eddy Falls, maybe Hanson, and whatever else our little group decides. My buddy and I have done 2 trips before in a group of 6 guys but this time its just us 2 and the wives. It's our first time self outfitting amdd the wives first trip altogether ... plus we had to change permits from our original May 18th entry into Nina Moose, an easy route we had done before, to unchartered for us territory into bear country haha. The wives think we somehow planned this. We are definitely taking the tow in and out after reading several suggestions on here, as well as John and Lynn at VNO suggesting it. Even though we arent renting gear but rather only the canoes and some basics like handling the permits, VNO have been awesome at communicating and helping us through the decisions needed on the fly. Can't say enough about them.

Great spot for that sort of trip! The portage is quick and easy. Its almost a joke to paddle for about 5 minutes before portaging but it gives you a chance to change up your canoe loading if you need. If you can, get the site on the S end of the largest island (site #998). Its an awesome site.
There's awesome walleye fishing around those islands.

Saw the insane forecast for Northern Minnesota this coming week, so got last minute permits. Heading into entry point #51 on Round Lake, to the West of Gunflint on 05/18. Going through Little Sag, haven't decided whether to go north or south from there, creating a few route options on PP.
The last two months stuck at home will require some serious wilderness cleansing. Hoping for some Lakers, Loons, and few people!

Have you thought of heading SSE from your entry to Frost Lake, then the Frost River, then up to Little Sag. Not for the faint of heart but so remote. We did the Frost in 2018 We saw no one after leaving Gabi through Tuscarora through Howl Swamp, through Long Island Lake, Frost Lake and then river. GREAT trip. We also did the Louse River next day after the Frost and did not see anyone else that day either. If you do this, you will portage many times on the Frost both marked as well as countless beaver dams. Recommend the site closest to the River exit on Frost and a first light start. Good Lakers in Frost Lake.

EP-47 Lizz to eventually Gaskin or Horseshoe in July for my son’s 7th birthday. First trip into the BWCA for my husband and son. My first overnight trip as an adult. We have a place on Poplar so this one was an easy choice.
Planning two more work-related trips. One with a friend and then a solo trip. Haven’t fully decided when and where to go with those. I will likely do a route I’m very familiar with for the solo. So either Lizz again or maybe Bearskin/Duncan/Rose. I really need to sit down and get these planned out. I was waiting to see what would happen before putting in too much effort.

Working out the details for another trip in early July. My wife, my son and I are planning to meet my other son and his girlfriend in the middle of their trip. Unsure as of right now. Was planning a short "newbies introduction to the BWCA" in mid-June out of Sawbill, but the newbies bailed (not without reason). Now hoping my son decides he still wants to go. If I don't get to Wine Lake this trip, I hope to in a late-September trip. Also hoping to take my wife on her first BWCA trip in early September to Vern through the Homer Lake entry.
As usual, lots of plans but nothing certain so far.

Seems like I might get a 2nd trip to the BW this year. Mid to late September. Destination & crew still undecided. Probably won't decide for sure on EP until closer but 2 routes under consideration are: 1) Clearwater to North Fowl along the border & back via the lakes just South of the border or 2) Looping out to Gabi and Little Sag via Round and returning via Crooked and Tuscarora.

Doing my early June trip with 2 friends, entering 6/6 at EP25, hitting NAK, Cherry, and SAK in a 9 day loop. Hoping for lakers, good weather, and good health, in no particular order! I took a look at the permits last night and every permit for 6/5 and 6/6 is taken, which surprised me a little. I know it's a popular entry point at a somewhat popular time, but it's got me feeling like we may not get the sites we want. Fingers crossed.

Well I was going to do a solo trip the week of June the 14th. That got cancelled.
Group trip in August is tentative.
Going to be one of "those" years I think. Just too much stuff going on from work to family stuff.

Finally, after two cancellations, we are heading into baker Friday the 29th. Hoping for some decent rains up there this weekend, rather not deal with a fire ban. But we are going regardless unless a ban should extend to camping stoves like the original one. That is a no go for me, not eating granola bars for 6 days straight.
Anyone returning from a recent trip would love to hear your comments about fishing, water temps, bugs(skeeters, black flies, ticks), etc...do I need to say I am kind of looking forward to it?
Also love to hear any thoughts/insights into the feeling of getting back out into nature and the BWCA after the craziness of the last few months, isolation, fear, concern, economic impact, etc.
If you went, hope it was awesome and renewed your spirit

I just received my reservation made by VCO. I am entering 6/6 on Saganaga Lake, for 14 days of escape! My disappointment in not going to Quetico is now replaced with excitement for seeing a new section of the BWCA.

Just made the call to cancel my Spring canoe trip. A little bummed but I just couldn't get excited about it. Guess I'll spend some time chasing these southern eyes around instead. Still planning on a Fall trip.

June 14 - Going in at Mudro-->Boot-->Fairy-->Gun. Thinking about pushing up to Crooked.
As we have never been to Crooked, is that the most direct route? Planning to go in early and trying to do it in a day. Not sure if this is best route, also if availability of sites will be an issue late afternoon?

BigBearArlich: "Mid June - EP 26 Wood Lake - Just me and my 4 and 6 year old daughters
Mid August - EP 37 Kawishiwi Lake up to Malberg - Guys Trip
Mid September - EP 59 - Partridge Lake - My first ever overnight hike - doing 4 days backpacking on the border route trail"
Curious to hear how the hike back to Partridge and the BRT went? Trail conditions etc.
