I have not been here long, due to poor internet until Musks Starlink. I have seen this also, maybe some passed on. The names you mentioned and some other posters Mastertangler, Bushpilot, etc....I know TGO died and there are others. They all seemed to have a lot to offer with their vast knowledge. Saw some of these names in the Jackpine Jim thread.

Probably a combination of things…
Interests change over time, how many times can you bring up the same topic or answer the same questions so some just naturally post less, some passed on, some lost interest, a few dropped out/off when COVID was in full effect—those were crazy polarizing times…probably other stuff I didn’t mention.

Life is a series of phases. Some offer more time on here, others less. Bogs is alive and well. He retired and moved closer to canoe country and is busy remodeling and building new life in new place. Kip is just a busy dude. ...makes me tired just watching all he does for work, family and play. Both are alive and well and still enjoy paddling and outdoors. I've seen them both this summer. Just a little shift in phases.

I believe riverrunner was banned.
I talked with Bushpilot, a moderator ruffled his flight feathers and he has chosen not to participate any longer.

Do I count?!?!? Covid kind of slowed down my interest since everyone in the world decided to go to the BWCA in 2020-2022 or at least it felt like it. Plus life got busy :) But still around and likely will be more so in the winter.

That would be really interesting to me to follow an “Old Farts Forum.” Have all those members come back and get in on some discussion threads. I bet they have tons of great advice to offer those of us still going in. Anyone up for starting the forum? I had bad luck starting my “Cooke Custom Sewing” forum. It’s been pretty lonely in there.

Its hard to stay active in them over time. My music one... likely not great lol.

This is not a directive. I'm speaking as a member of this board, not as a moderator. It's only a suggestion regarding starting an "Old Farts" private forum... you can do as you wish.
If you want the older members of the board to reengage, I would suggest starting a thread right here in the Listening Point - General Discussion forum. More folks - young AND old - will see it and the conversation will flow. Making a private forum makes it more hidden and far less likely to encourage engagement.

Those were the Good Old days, my friend, those were the good Old days. Well in many ways the good old days are ahead. The BWCA is actually only a generation old in many ways.
What I miss most is some of the locals and very long-time canoe people. They have so much tradition and Savy how BWCA was and have changed with gear and expected experience. From the old wooden canoe to Kevlar. No model T trips and flat tires on the trip north now. Like History, hope it is written down to be able to pass it on.
I am sure some young whipper snapper will fill the gap like so many vacuums are always filled.

These are wise words. I guess it comes down to this; any time I come across one, I ask seasoned veterans of the BWCA what the single most important piece of advice they can offer to a less experienced generation of park goers? Did they have an “ah ha!” moment during a particular trip which made a long term difference to them? Would they offer philosophical advice or more practical guidance? Was there a particular piece of gear they found over the years that they just couldn’t live with or couldn’t live without?
I am truly curious as to people’s answers on these types of questions. Any answers are appreciated, especially if you’re an old fart.

Some of us old geezers slowly drift away when other old geezers slowly disappearing from moving on to passing away.
Their longtime friends are gone so you lose interesting in this forum. I myself miss many of the old timers and it gets harder to post and follow.
Also been there done that, so maybe nothing new happening. Just moving on to different pastures.
I think many still lurking on the sideline.

I've been a member since 2005 so I don't know if I count. I never posted a lot. I was more of a lurker. For me I injured my back and that caused me to skip trips to the BWCA for a year or two. Even though my back is better I just never got back into going to the BWCA. Around the same time my river canoe took some damage also. Because of all that I quit checking this site for quite a few years. I finally repaired my river canoe. A couple of weeks ago I went canoeing for the first time in about 6 years. That got me thinking about a BWCA trip this fall so I started checking in here again.

I think that was in 2006. I’d be up for a redo, same EP & roughly same general route, in 2026. Maybe a few more people would join.

You may find some of my comments from long ago. Many of the names you mentioned I have met and consider friends. Life changes, commitments change, abilities change.
In the last nine years I’ve ruptured both Achilles tendons with surgical fixes, had four rotator cuff surgeries involving multiple tendons and a total knee replacement as my ACL had been gone for 5-10 years. I’m in my early 50’s btw.
The last time I paddled, I had difficulty paddling a solo across a medium size lake against a slight chop. I knew then I had no business being on the water. No business risking someone else’s life because I couldn’t save my own. I haven’t returned despite the intensity of the loss.

I certainly do miss Miss Molly. Hope she will chime in.
Old Salt and Mastertangler were banned from this site several years back.
There are a lot of older members on bwca.com … and I do enjoy reading their posts. Lots of experience.
Heck, I am turning 70 in a couple of months and I guess that qualifies me as “OLD”.

Great to see some of the older posters reply! As Pete (Jackfish) said, life changes occur, and priorities become rearranged. I started back in 03, and the BWCA was my get away each year after working in Education all year. However, Now that I'm retired, have 6 grandkids, and we have changed our camping methods (RV) I don't trip as much as I used to. Still have all the equipment though. Some medical issues have caused some modifications as well. I need to bring my 11-year-old grandson up and do a trip.
Again great to see some names I have not seen in a while!

Another 14yo here like OneMatch. Not here as often as I just try to cut back on online stuff in general and keep my head above water in real life. I thought I didn't need any more gear, but every time I stop in here I find a new gadget I might want to add... :)
Kids grew up and got minds of their own, not as willing to be dragged into the wilderness unless I can corral their +1s into it also. This has caused me to actually plan and execute some "glamping" trips instead and switch to more solo trips for wilderness paddling.
My knees hate me these days and surgery is ahead no doubt, but I've managed to get my kids camping in Michigan or MN state parks, either on the water or paddle-in. Also went to Voyageur's national park a couple years back and hope to do more of that. I like the BWCA-adjacent national forest paddling as well - where I don't need to sweat a permit, but can just paddle in last minute.
I am embarrassed to admit that last year (with my eldest, her childhood friend, and the friend's 4yo) we paddled an 8-person tent into a state park campsite and found a way to set it up just barely fitting between trees. We had air mattresses (this has to be a sin) and battery operated pumps. The young adults brought a REAL cooler, dry ice, smoked salmon, and huge bottles of apple juice (that I would have paid $100 for by the last day). The "kids" even paddled to the park campground and took showers. It was not my idea of a wilderness paddle, but I was indeed pretty comfortable and well-fed. If that's how I now share the woods with my young adult children, I guess I can tolerate it.
Anyway, I love this site and still enjoy lurking, but (as today) I'm trying to earn a buck as a self-employed editor, so dare not spend as much time in fun places like this or other things get delayed.
GLAD FOR ALL OF YOU THAT ARE STILL HERE. Thanks for the updates on others.

I started on the CCBB as a young 20-year-old, and now I'm in my upper 40s. I was invited to join BWCA in 2003. This was before kids, and now my kids are grown into adults doing their own trips! It's crazy how many people have gone. So many people have helped me over the years that it's hard to describe their impact.

Nothing like tripping with the grandkids. It's the best! My five grandsons always tell their friends that it's the best part of their summer! You can't make any better memories than time in God's creation with your favorite people.
And they're starting to do a lot more of the work as they're getting older and stronger and I keep heading further into the "old fart" category!

I've been on the site for 10 years now. Still get to the the BW often, the last two years I have been volunteering for the Tofte and Gunflint Ranger districts working with the wilderness Rangers in the BWCA. What an experience.
This will be my last year doing that on a regular basis. I may volunteer a little in the next couple years but at 61 it is getting a little hard on my body.

I post less than I used to. With over 10 years here and over 77 in real life, I think I qualify as an Older Member. My tripping stopped 2 years ago which was with my oldest son and 3 grand kids. I will only resume when I can go/take some one to be my sherpa and medical advisor.

In OneMatch terms, I'm 14 years old... Still lurk, and still head up for trips into the Q. Still single portage, and according to another thread I have some snob-like traits - single portaging, Northstar canoes, and hammocks being the three biggest.

I qualify on both counts - it says I've been here since 2009 (CCBB before) and I'm 73. I recognize all the names. Yeah, people die, get old (& sick), interests change, etc.
First trip 2002, 2nd 2006, and once every year since then.
Scottie, if you want to ask questions, go ahead. There's more than one most important pieces of advice, sometimes "ah ha!" moments are a process, there's both practical and philosophical advice, I've left more gear behind as I've gone along than I've added, made some basic changes, but there's a lot of good gear out there and new stuff all the time.
You'll find that not everyone's advice is good for you and your advice is not good for everyone.
So ask if you want more detail . . .

I've been here since 2006, but not active for several years. Knee and shoulder problems have taken their toll. Hoping to get a trip in next year. I enlisted a group of sherpas (some of my Boy Scouts from years past) to do the heavy lifting so I can paddle and enjoy being out with them again.

Hi Spartan 2,
Yep, I am still visiting this wonderful site but more in the role of a lurker
as I still have the canoe traveling bug and think fondly of my many years being a member.
Carbonfiber's question is one of the reasons why, as I have had the same curious question about the many posters and members that have contributed to this site but never thought of how to ask it "Where have we gone?". For myself it has been more of the different phase that I
chose to explore, thus lurking in the background, keeping in touch in an unobtrusive way has its appeal.
As the personalities change the helpful nature and questions that are answered stays the same. A lot of knowledge exist here and the willingness to share remains strong and helpful. I am grateful for that.
I was unable to get a trip to the BW or Canada this year due to upcoming surgery, was confined to the Adirondacks which is a special place for me and a lot closer of a ride. I tend to enjoy searching out good equipment that is lite weight, tough and usable. Have my Hornbeck New Tricks 14' solo down to 22lbs and tricked out in a manner I like. I am able to portage with a self made plastic custom clip so no yoke is needed. Have one of the first editions made and it has been a game changer for these aging bones. While I do solo I still prefer the company of like minded travelers to share the experience with, but they are seemingly in shorter supply each year, lol.
I keep thinking about a trip out to Canoecopia, who knows maybe this year. Doctor has said if I take my PT seriously I should be able to take a trip as of next May. I like goals.
I thank Adam and the moderators for keeping this site on a mission to help others and share when we can.
Safe travels.

My own interest have changed along with the arthritis in my knees. More time with the grand-kids, family, long road trips with my wife out west. I've sold off most of my canoe oriented gear. Now reserve any commenting to gear questions I can answer and slowing in that part due to the repetition of questions.

Signed on in 2006 so I guess I am 18 although feeling my 68 years. I have spent so much time on here perusing, learning and contributing and it has been a big part of my life. Very grateful for this amazing community.
I am hopefully not done tripping in the BWCA but my trips will be different due to health constraints. But that's ok, some day I won't be able to go at all and I dread that day. More easy first day in with minimal portaging, basecamp and daytrips. That's about all I got left in me but can still be an amazing experience.
I've been around long enough to remember many of the "old timers" that are no longer with us, and some that are still around but just not present much. I appreciate them but also appreciate all of those that are with us and of course the moderators(and Adam)that have done an incredible job keeping this going and on track.
Funny to think that a website could be such a big part of my life but then I realize, it's not the website, it's the community. Thanks.

It’s funny, I was just thinking I’m 63 and don’t feel old at all. I still feel like I’m 40, I build houses as a side gig and was on a ladder 20’ in the air painting stuff today and it didn’t occur to me till now that I might be nuts. But I’m gonna work till I die cuz that is what I like to do. I have no body parts that have given out on me, besides almost dying of cancer haha, that was just a bump in the road, made me stronger. I’ll never get sick again, that chemo kills everything man, it’s like a life long force field. I’m serious, am I supposed to feel old cuz I don’t, the best is yet to come, I truly believe that.
I haven’t been to BW in a few years, don’t have a trip planned but I’ll be back, so much fun.
Remember Tremolo, she was cool, I have four examples of her artwork on my walls. Pretty punk rock cool, glad I have them.
Over and out cheers scat

I still lurk from time to time. Spend a little more time on the FB side of the forum. Since I retired I spend a lot more time at my cabin. Got one knee fixed in May and one more to go before I take another trip. I still have the interest and would like to take a least one more long trip north of the border. It's what motivates me to work hard on the knee rehab.
The forum has changed in that most of the "characters" no longer post. Much easier on the moderators though. :-)

When I first joined in 2009 I always enjoyed posts by Fishguts. No sure if he's around or posting anymore.

Wow. This is intense. Sorry to hear about all your travails. I can only imagine as somebody who had an ACL replacement, a broken finger in BWCA that required surgery, and no way am I going in for the surgery on my shoulder, I’m trying to PT my way through it. But you’ve endured so much more! I know the Boundary Waters misses you. Tell us what you’ve been doing in the meantime…

Unfortunately Patty hasn’t posted in quite a while. He hasn’t responded to personal emails either. I and others miss him as well.

Agreed. In fact, wetcanoedog, I will be copying your design of using a Swiss Canteen to make a ditch kit soon. Great idea.
I joined back in spring of 2008 when getting ready for my first canoe triping in the BWCA. Learned a lot back then, still learning, but mostly chiming in with advice when motivated.

Where do you see when u joined? Ha, guess what, senior guy here, can't find it, what a surprise.
Best site for canoe trip info in general bar none. So many tips tricks and work arounds that made my trips better, that will continue I see for the next generation.
Generally in the lurker mode now, and randomly get private questions about Crooked lake info, which I am glad to share. I know a lot of fish info on that lake and always pass it on if asked.
Still trip randomly, 66 now but no plans on not going, lucky to have all my real parts in me still working as well as could be expected.
Thanks to all the people who make this site work/run, it is a treasure for those who look for this type of information.

I’m 74 and my wife is 73. Over 50 trips since we started in 1971. Not a heavy poster but have gotten a lot of information from this site. We can’t tolerate commercial freeze dried food so do our own and it tends to make for a bulkier load. Since they won’t recognize the effectiveness of the blue barrel , after this year any trips we are able to make will be Quetico or Woodland Caribou.

I stalk here and there :)
Life caught up with me! I was very active prior to my daughter being born… she’s 10 now! I also went back to school and got my NP. I still go north every year at least once, but my “social media time” has greatly dwindled :)

I'm still around but more of the silent observer type. Post occasionally. A couple more years to retirement. I just bought a canoe so will be able to make more trips then...at least that's the plan.

I have been around since 2010 as well (seems like a popular year). This site taught me how to be better in the BWCAW. I found better gear, great tips and Butthead taught me how to better use my GPS. It is a great community. I never posted a significant amount, but read many posts over the years. At one time, I would come in 3-4 times a week. Now it is maybe once a month. Life gets busy, children grow and move out, interests change, so I don't get up North as often as I would like. This year may be the first time in a long time that I don't have a trip scheduled. I have been doing a lot of scuba diving this summer to rekindle an old hobby that I love doing.
It is great to still see some familiar names out there. Miss many of the people who have passed on or no longer post.

I was a youthful 60 when I arrived here. On my first solo, a couple of young guys rushed to help me portage. Maybe I wasn't as youthful as I imagined.
I am now 78.

Like a lot of previous posters less frequently more sporadically. I hope it’s because he is too busy fishing.

If that post doesn’t get him to respond in a witty way…he isn’t monitoring this site anymore for sure LOL
