I really like the flats hats...really long bill and I have a little shroud for my neck. Water repellant, too.
Funny, the first time I ever saw one of these hats was on a farm outside of Hawley, MN.

I like my Tilley hemp hat.

True confessions........ I avoided Tilley hats for many years...... The name "Tilley"..... it just sounded too yuppie for me. I finally gave in.

These hats have great wide brims (too many years of sun has caused some skin problems) and tie downs that keep them on your head in the worst of weather.

I resisted the lure of the Tilly hat as long as I could - they are nearly the perfect wilderness hat.

My doofus magnet I also have a Filson tincloth hat, but is too warm for me most of the time. This thing is light, stuffable and has lots of mesh on top for cooling. Don't think it'll ever get stolen either.

I wear this type when it is really sunny and warm out to shade the back and sides of my head. I got it at REI.

I had a hard time spending the $ on this Tilly but it has been worth every penny. Washable, light weight, stays on my head, little pocket inside the top of the hat and.......love it!

Notice the MP on the log. Hmm? It couldn't have been the MP from around here! He knows better. Or......

I hate self portraits too so no chance of a picture with me wearing the hat. I use an Outdoor Research Bucket hat. Works well to keep the sun off and the rain running down my jacket and not inside.

I like it cause it takes a beating, it's generally waterproof, and has a loop underneath so it won't blow off.

Red Heads gotta keep their ears covered.

I think wool felt hat's like this are the best.
Warm on cold days...& warm when wet.
And yet, on hot days you can dunk it in the lake & cool off
while keeping the sun off ears & nose.

01/06/2011 11:44PM
We have leather Outback hats. Love them. Though I like phantom's better. His has been on many trips and it is still awesome. Keeps off the sun and rain, fans the fire...isn't stuff able but that hasn't really bothered us.

01/06/2011 11:50PM
Of course, you could go this route.....

01/06/2011 11:52PM
I don't think I'd recommend either of these styles....

01/06/2011 11:55PM
Another view of our hats! B has something made of goretex. She liked it a lot.

I love the oiled leather of my hat. Wish it were a bit lighter brown, more like phantom's, and I wish it fit be better. It's slightly big. Phantom's fits him like a old pair of Levi's: worn in just right.

01/07/2011 12:23AM
my wool crusher pendleton hat. this is in yellowstone, wyoming. not wearing a cowboy hat here is considered a faux pas.

01/07/2011 12:52AM
This is my Minnesota canoeing hat. In California, I wear a slightly broader-brimed, less rain resistant hat.

01/07/2011 01:37AM
Tilley for me. I think it is the T3.

Ok, so I see old Bill Mason wearing this well-worn hat on his videos. Somebody tells me its a Tilley, so I go look for one and find it. The ad says an elephant ate one and after it came out, they just washed it off and kept on wearing it. Plus it has a lifetime guarantee, so its got to be good uh? That was 1985 and I am still wearing it, much to my wife's dismay...

Standard Issue army camo bucket hat. Vietnam era I think, found it in an old box in my dad's garage when I was a kid. Chin strap for wind, nice vents to keep head cool, mid length brim to keep sun off but stay out of the way. All I need to do is treat it with permethrin and it will be perfect.

I wish I knew who carried this one back. I feel like it would be more meaningful. I enjoy it as a hand-me-down from my dad enough though I guess. Best hat I've ever owned though!

01/07/2011 10:46AM
I wear a Columbia nylon hat with a big brim to keep the sun off. When I get hot I just dip it in the water, and it is good in the rain, too.

Spartan1's Viet Nam jungle hat is very important. Twice we left it behind in Ely and we had to go back for it before we could start the trip. We bought a replacement a few years ago because it is getting so fragile, but neither of us can bear to put the replacement in use.

Damn straight! ;-)

Ah, back in the day when she'd keep a hat on....if you see my other pictures, if you can catch a glimpse of her (behind my other daughter in the canoe, or next to me in the pic of the three of us), she isn't wearing one. Couldn't keep it on her this past summer, and she had a cutie patootie pink rain hat with a nice brim. At least she has dark hair. In this picture, she hardly had any hair yet...I and my two girls were all virtually bald until 18 months of age.

She's a spunky one, that's for sure.

bought this at the local Scheels the day I returned from the BW 3 years ago. Used to wear baseball caps but the but netting would hang down and rest on top of my ears resulting in what one can only refer to as cauliflower ears. (I dont react well to mosquito and especially gnat bites)

also brings good luck with the fishing too.

REI- version. Crushable, packable, super light weight, strap to keep it from blowing away- water proof. Black under the brim to keep the water reflection down- nice sized brim for keeping the bug net away from my face.

Here's a collection of hats. Another vote for Tilley. I'm the one on the far left. Yeah, they're expensive, but then again I had the same one for 15-18 years and when it became worn, I sent it back to Tilley and they returned it and a new one, so only half as expensive.

More or less--this was a youngster and his dad forgot the headnets. It was late May and a really bad year for b-flies. Poor kid was really allergic to blackfly bites--got bit on his ear and it swelled up 'til it looked like he had a potato stuck to the side of his head. He never stopped smiling and catching fish like crazy though.

I alternate between this leather hat I got at the Duluth Pack store Minnetonka leather hat and a baseball cap.
Baseball cap works best when it's raining hard and you need to put on the raingear jacket hood.
