In this day and age, phone can do all of the GPS and mapping that a dedicated GPS can do, often better and for less money. The one thing that the average phone can't do is get service in the backcountry. In my opinion, the inReach Mini fills the gap in a nearly perfect way. I can send messages to friends and family and get an SOS out if there is an emergency. That is all I need it to do, and it can do those things simply and well in a compact and lightweight package. The various data/message plans are reasonable, and allow you to switch service on and off as needed.My only complaint so far with the inReach Mini is that the Garmin web interface for setting up and managing the device is not very intuitive. It takes some getting used to, and seems like there are a lot of ways that this could be simplified and streamlined.
All in all a great little device that I would highly recommend.
