I use the previous generation of this filter, same cartridge. Pretty high volume, easy to pump,, strongly suggest using a prefilter on the inlet - (coffee filter/nylon hose rubberbanded in place) to greatly prolong the life of the rather expensive filter cartridge.

I've been using this baby for 10 years. Replaced the filter twice but never had a problem and most importantly never been sick.

I have had mine since '03. Never had a problem. One filter lasts the whole trip. You can use the Hiker Pro Filter which comes with an additional screen that wraps around the filter. The only issue I have is the inlet hose could be longer. I would love to use a branch to put it farther away from the shore and keep it from floating back and sucking up the bottom.

Affordable and effective. Simple design. 15+ years and still going strong. Now, if it could only pump itself :)

I've had my Hiker Filter since 2003. I've been pleased with it. Construction is robust and pumping is not difficult. I just bought a new filter element and it comes with a washable filter protector that wraps around the element and is an additional pre-filter, kinda like putting a coffee filter inside the cylinder.

Great piece of equipment. Have used it on the Appalachian Trail and in the BWCA. Never had any problem even when used in not the best to water. Definitely pre filter if possible to save filter life.

This has been my stand by filter for a dozen years. Reliable. I still bring one as a baclup to my Katadyn Base Camp system.

Have been using the Hiker for 6 years now. Have broken the inlet nipple and am not sure how it happened. I would think this would be a replaceable type item but it is not so normally you have to buy the whole hosing, but I fixed it myself with some creativity and a nylon nipple from the hardware store. Been a real good filter and my only complaint would be the replacement filter cost. Seems high considering the cost of most standard Brita or PUR water filter cartridges.

Been using it 10 years replaced filter once and only to be sure it would be in good working order for the next trip. Love it.

Just purchased this filter for my last trip, and compared to the filters I have used in the past, this one one was easier to use, and had greater output by far. Highly recommend!

Been using this for about 6 years. Had to replace it this year because one of the seams started leaking when pumping water.

Pro's: lightweight, easy to maintain, easy to use, efficient.

Con's: nothing significant, wish my original hadn't crapped out on me.

I have used this filter on all my backpacking / canoe trips for the last 5 years... I have only needed to change the filter one time.... I recommend wrapping the inlet end with a towel, bandana or a coffee filter if pumping shallow water.

This water filter is great for the price. Its everything you need for your BW trip and is very easy to use. I have used mine for 3 years now and I finally just replaced the filter. They say you should replace it every year, but I dont think that is necessary. Just make sure you take the filter out of the unit after your trip so it can air out. Also, give it a few pumps and let the water flush out the system before every use.

I've had this filter since 1991. This thing just keeps going and going. I usually replace the filter element about every 2 yrs. Works great for me whether I'm backpacking or canoeing.

Pros: Easy to operate and clean.

Cons: Cost of replacment filter element.
