My 5 star rating is just bwca canoe trip use. I would give it a much higher rating for use in the mountains, or super cold weather or (I suppose but have no experience) for an expedition to the far corners of the earth,

As a canoe tripping stove it functions mostly as a very loud, very hot water boiler. If you wanted water boiled for pasta, right now, this is a good stove. If you want to do anything else that resembles cooking you should look for something else.

I own 2 older XGK II stoves. Except for learning how to work with a limited flame adjustment it's a simple robust stove. One of mine is equipped with a Berni Dawg silent cap for quiet operation the other is stock roarer burner easier to clean, and light. Reliable and quite hot it is only passed in flame power by my Simmerlight and Whisperlight 600 and their larger burner heads.

Yes it's loud, but my XGK gets a pot of water boiling REALLY fast, and has been extremely reliable for me since christmas of 2005 or 2006. I had to replace a few washers a couple of years ago, and that's it.

I don't think this is built for simmering much of anything, but if you want to make a quick coffee in the morning or boil some water for a dehydrated meal, which is 90% of my BWCA meal prep, this is hard to beat.
