A week from today, Terry is undergoing open heart surgery in which the doctors will stop his heart and replace both his mitral and aortic valves. Please keep a fellow paddler in your thoughts.
We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll go paddle.

Oh man... Terry has been through so much. Prayers for a talented surgeon and a speedy and full recovery.

OneMatch: "A week from today, Terry is undergoing open heart surgery in which the doctors will stop his heart and replace both his mitral and aortic valves. Please keep a fellow paddler in your thoughts."
Jerry et all, thanks so much! Had hoped with all the cardiac "Repairs" last year and earlier this year that things would improve? But they found that I had a problem with two valves instead of just the one we were aware of. drnatus, that was my hope too, but too much "Scarring" from radiation treatments, so "Open heart" it will be on Monday.
In the meantime, let me tell you'all how much I appreciate all the support and love I've felt here the last few years! Jimmy Stewart's character in "It's a Wonderful Life" has nothing on me in terms of friends, wife, and angels! 'Ol "Clarence" certainly pales in comparison to MY guardian angels; I'm a VERY fortunate man! Hopefully 2020 will find me back on the Gunflint listening to the loon music and my little white throated sparrows serenading me through the pines? That's my goal. THANKS AGAIN!

Terry is planning on attending the Ozark Rendezvous in the fall.. Please keep his wife Margaret in your thoughts and prayers too.
And valve replacement is scary but not impossible. My son in law has had to have several of them. He is now up to cow size. It was a congenital thing and valves have to be sized accordingly as you grow.
Terry ya got this..

"Thank you for all the prayers his bleeding has stopped He is in CTU Room 7"
She also mentions how much she has appreciated the doctor. "
Whew!
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

Good to hear. What Ntcry said again. Thought about and prayed for him last week - and for all who face these realities. When you have to sell your good canoes because of health issues its not fun. I’m only about to be 49 and I have had a bad knee all year - problem not yet identified. Able to do two trips so far but it keeps getting worse and it makes you wonder. We are not guaranteed another trip or another day. So heres to a speedy recovery Ozark!

PRAYING WARRIORS
TERRY
AGAIN IN SURGERY!
no words.. no idea what went wrong.
Guess they could not close him up due to too much fluid and now he is hemorrhaging and they can't stop it..

Oh, nothing has gotten done here this afternoon because I am praying pretty much non-stop!! Terry is a very special person and he has gone through so much. We had sort of planned that we might see him in August on the Gunflint, and I am praying that 2020 will be our year to do that. Hard to believe that a person you have never met can become a close friend, but Terry has been so supportive to me and I am praying for my dear friend now.
Thanks for keeping those of us who don't do FB in the loop, yellowcanoe.

Positive thoughts going his way. Also it's a good time especially if you live in his area to go donate blood in his name. It sounds like he can use it and it takes off some of the expense.

Done.

Keep going bro. Only the strong survive. And only the good die young. It’s not your time, stay wild and free. That sounds rough, amazing what the human body can endure when the mind is committed. A true fighter never gives up or gives in.

Because of fluid built up, the surgery to close his chest had to be delayed and he needed dialysis and drugs to keep him paralyzed during this time. This morning, Margaret posted that the surgery to close his chest would likely be done this afternoon. Margaret posted 3 hours ago that Terry was out of surgery and his chest was finally closed. Shortly after that post she posted that Terry would be off the vent tomorrow.
I'm continuing with my prayers for him and hope you will continue with your positive thoughts for his recovery and healing and supportive thoughts for Margaret too.

I'll admit that I sometimes just pop into FB and Margaret's page to check for updates. Understatement to say that this had been a difficult time. So happy to see all the supportive comments to Terry and Margaret on FB and here. I posted the other day telling her and telling her to tell Terry how many Flying Moosers had been sending best wishes and prayers.
I'll be sure to share further updates I see on FB if Kim doesn't.
Don't know if this is appropriate but Terry has a gofundme page:

Definitely keeping him in my thoughts. At times like these, I always try to remember that the reason they do these difficult procedures is because they really can work and have great outcomes. Hoping that is what he and his loved ones get.
08/08/2019 06:21AM
Oh yes Lynda, I check Bwca.com more often just to see if there are updates. And think about Terry a bunch. Old OZ (as miss Molly referrers to him) is a great internet friend to many. Working on his heart must have been like working on a big Cat Diesel engine... he has as big a heart as any buddy I know.

Spartan2: "Bump.
Just because we are not getting regular updates, I still want to remind everyone to keep Terry in your thoughts and prayers."
Definitely!
It's a long process in getting our dear friend Terry on the road to recovery. Margaret mentioned yesterday, when someone asked if Terry was off the vent, that they are weening him off gradually. Later yesterday she posted that Terry's chest IV and others were being changed to prevent infections. Keep sending those prayers and supportive thoughts to Terry and Margaret too.
08/08/2019 07:19AM
Yes, my heart goes out to Margaret. When Spartan1 had sepsis and was in the hospital for more than a week a few years ago, I was thorougly exhausted. Part of it is the feeling of helplessness, and another part is the constant caring about someone you love. Even when you pray and leave it in God's hands. . .you are still just completely drained at the end of the day.

“Thanks Ginny! I was on an offshore Maine Island without Internet..
Isn't it cool how God does not need Internet?"
Very true! Hope you had a good time on offshore Maine Isl. Did you see any puffins? If they are on that isl., are they still on land? Sweet little birds although not melodious sounding...
08/08/2019 03:49PM
We saw some on the ocean while we were on the ferry.. They have finished nesting and raising young.. Only a puffin winters on the cold North Atlantic . Does that make it a true snowbird? . ( well there may be others). Hope you have gotten to see some.
They are on several Maine Islands but not all.. Best is Machias Seal Island . Its in New Brunswick technically.. If you come book way ahead like a year cause the tours are restricted and book fast!
I am thinking hard about going to Rendezvous.. Precious friends there . Can't take them for granted. We are all marching on the downward escalator.
Margaret wrote that he is still on the vent and in a medically induced coma. He may be woken on Saturday and taken off the vent.
In this case thoughts and prayers are productive so please keep Terry in your mind.. And your memories if you have been able to paddle with him ( or try to evade his camera!!)

boonie: "Sounds like he's paddling downwind now. "
its a very weak wind right now.. He is still on a vent.. That he has had to be in a medically induced coma for nearly two weeks is something I can't wrap my head around..And Margaret has had to stand by the whole time..
She just posted this 40 minutes ago:
It's Day 13. Terry's still on vent & dialysis. Got feeding tube in & needs prayers to get stronger.

Posts from Margaret on FB yesterday and today:
Yesterday he had surgery to remove one of IVs and put one in his neck. He had a CAT scan this morning and as of about half an hours ago, she said he was in his room sleeping and doing well. She also said she had gotten 8 hours of sleep last night (great news!). From what a friend asked, I believe he is still on the vent.
Margaret also mentioned that tomorrow is Terry's birthday.

missmolly: " Birthday gift? "
Yes... things are not going well. The last two posts from Margaret both today
'"Terry has Cirrhosis of the liver from fatty liver. Pancreatitis found a lump on it. Gallbladder problems.'' There are other causes of cirrhosis.. google them
"CT scan also showed 2 nodules in his lungs but too weak to do anything"
This must be incredibly mentally draining for Margaret and Terry. I am not sure what the too weak to do anything is. I am just guessing too weak to maybe have things biopsied.
08/16/2019 04:17PM
That is very tough.
From a lot of experience with people in the lymphoma patient community getting scanned, nodules in the lungs are fairly common and very often are not important. I hope that is the case here and that things start improving again.

+1
But the fundraiser is for a good cause. I don't think that the original plan was for a month in the hospital. Donate please if you can. For those that prefer not to do on line Puffin Gin or I can PM you the snail mail address.

Still sending prayers and keeping them on my heart. Glad they let him stay on the vent that long (vs trach) and that he was finally able to wean off it. Stay strong friends!! Tons of people pulling for you. Deal with the rest of it later. Massive hugs from Minnesota!!!!!

Yes, massive hugs, indeed! So glad to get good news.
We spent last night at Naniboujou Lodge and are now headed south to end our vacation in the canoe country. Thought about Terry so much and said many prayers, but they won't stop now.

Oh my, yellowcanoe! Don't apologize for "not keeping up" when you have recently had major surgery!! But thanks for letting us know what you have heard about Terry.
Now take some time to care for yourself and heal. I hope your hip replacement went well and that all of your rehab is successful.

Yes Kim, take care of yourself. Hope your recovery from hip surgery goes smoothly.
I don't have as good a reason for not keeping y'all informed on what I see on FB re Terry. Just busy and buzzing around.
About a day ago, Margaret posted that "Terry was off of Levophed. No(?t) taking fluid off his lungs. His lungs look much BETTER"
--I don't know what Levophed is but assuming it's some sort of med for fluid removal. EDIT: Just Googled this:
Levophed (norepinephrine bitartrate) is a vasoconstrictor, similar to adrenaline, used to treat life-threatening low blood pressure (hypotension) that can occur with certain medical conditions or surgical procedures. Levophed is often used during or after CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation).
As far as the why for gall bladder drainage procedure, Pete Blanc (who I thought might be on this site and who is a surgeon) gave this explanation:
"To those who are puzzled, the gall bladder ordinarily stores and concentrates bile between meals. Food leaving the stomach and entering the duodenum triggers a release of a hormone that stimulates gall bladder contraction. But this does not happen when one is not eating normally. The bile within the gall bladder becomes thick and sludge-like and bile in the gall bladder neck and cystic duct can become inspissated resulting in a blockage of bile flow. Bacteria, ordinarily found in gall bladder bile in very low concentrations, can multiply in the stagnant bile. The resulting gall bladder inflammation is called "acalculous cholecystits" (acalculous = no stones). For a person who is not in shape for surgical removal of the gall bladder, alternatives are either needle aspiration or percutaneous catheter cholecystostomy (drainage of the gall bladder with a small catheter) done under ultrasound guidance."
I looked up word inspissated: means thickened or congealed.
I'm learning a lot about many medical things. Just wish it wasn't because of Terry's challenges. Very happy to hear about each and every positive sign of recovery. Prayers continue for Terry and Margaret.

this is one time when FB is useful for real friends.. Nothing today which means there still is undecided stuff.. Margaret is one strong strong chick.. If she gets ahold of a paddle watch out!. I can rest.. She cannot.. this is mentally a torture for her.

I kind of expected this journey to go a little faster. Thank goodness Terry is one tough dude with a great wife for a partner. And YC... yeah, had my hip replaced. No big deal... WHAT?... That’s a big deal YC! (Note, not a direct quote but how I perceived it)... Anyways, I pray for continued healing for everyone here. I feel like a little whimp amongst some pretty tough folks.

Terry's road to recovery continues to be bumpy, rocky, with ups and down and potholes, slippery rock faces and muck holes, like a challenging portage. This from Margaret this am:

Continuing to pray for him and Margaret.

Thanks so much to everyone for the donations, prayers and good thoughts. It means a lot to the family and it meant a lot to Terry as well; he just wasn't able to get on Facebook and say so."

Terry was such a caring helpful guy who was always ( to me) in good spirits. He and his wife were a perfect pair.
May his faith allow him to paddle on.. Trying to think of something we could establish in his memory connected with canoeing..

Oh, my heart is just breaking. Such a kind man, so caring. He was a huge support to me during my hip surgeries, answering questions and just being a friend. We had an email correspondence, and we were hoping to meet face to face this summer when Spartan1 and I were on the Gunflint. After this surgery came up, I put my hopes for that on hold until next summer.

I'm so sorry to hear this.
Terry was the one who put me in my first Kruger design boat, which was life changing for me. That is no understatement. It opened up all kinds of new fun and adventure. He and Margaret gave a little rat terrier of ours a wonderful home for the dog's last few years of life, and for that we are always grateful.
He will be sorely missed.

This is absolutely terrible news. I think I can say that we all were hoping for and expecting a complete recovery--and a return to canoe country. Peace and fond memories to Terry's family and friends.
