Sometimes there's days like this. My last three solos I had challenging weather on the first couple of days then beautiful days for the rest of the trip. If I had a choice this is the way I would want it. My last extremely bad weather trip was in 2007. This pic is day one in Sept. 2013. Luna was a good soldier.

You are correct about the beach location Banksiana!
All the pictures in my initial reply are from several recent Quetico solo trips, and the beach photo was in fact taken on Sturgeon Lake. (I'm fairly certain kanoes' picture was taken there as well, albeit with different water levels.)
The sandy peninsula lies on the southeast shore of Sturgeon Lake, about mid-way between the mouth of the Maligne River and Scripture Island.
Latitude:48.45705 Longitude:-91.63475
Aside from the expansive beach, there's a huge amount of open space under the small pines for camping, and almost unlimited tent pads. If there was ever a location in Quetico that could host a canoe camper's "kegger", this would be the spot. (A few more pictures below)
I saw only one other paddler, (a solo tripper in an old, brown Sawyer "Goldenglass" Summersong), while paddling and camping on Sturgeon Lake when I took these pictures on a September 2013 solo trip. During the peak summer months though, you can bet there would be many visitors to this location.
Unfortunately, the were several row boats stacked towards the back of the site, which I assume were cached by the First Nations' guides.
Pickerel Lake and Quetico Lake also have some notable sand beaches. The only sand beaches that I can recall seeing in the BWCAW would be on Frost Lake, Alice Lake, some on Seagull Lake, and a few other lakes that I can't think of right now.
My apologizes for the thread deviation, but I wanted to address the beach question.
Now back to more solo pictures!

Was that portage hard to find? I've was close one early spring day but didn't battle through the weeds to search for it-beautiful river to paddle.

Not really, especially in the spring. It can be a little wet on the Fowl lake side though.

It wasn't too hard to find. Just follow the rice till the river starts, then go up-river 50 to 70 yards, then it's on the right side.
Out of control, extreme team.

bwcasolo, I'm surprised to see the tent. Is that an older pic from your ground dwelling days?
I went from tent to hammock and now back to tent because I bring my dog. I'm thinking of getting the dog her seperate tent in the future so I can return to the trees.

Very nice walleye, how many inches?"
The pic was of ENORMOUS importance to me. That fish was my first ever walleye. It is also HUGE in that it is the only selfie I have done with a fish.

September 2013 quetico loop from Louisa east to McEwen then up the Falls Chain to Saganagons then west through the Man Chain back to PP. The layover on emerald was worth it just to see the water color.

So we're still doing this!?
Okay, not the Mississippi River, but close. Here's a few random pictures from several of my Lower Wisconsin River solo trips over the years.

Here are a few pics. North Carolina last weekend, overnight solo in Merchant Millpond state park.
A couple Alaska pic's of solo last year.
I'm leaving for Anchorage tomorrow. Hope to be canoeing soon. Some of the big lakes on the Kenai Pinnisula never froze this winter, due to the 2nd warmest winter on record.
Last one is North Carolina again, campsite on the lake. Rented canoe.

May the rivers be crooked and winding, and your portages lonesome, leading to the most amazing view.

These are the evenings you live for on a solo. I wish I had taken more video but I was living in the moment and almost forgot to capture the moment.

I got a day off from firefighting today and did a day trip in the Chugach NF, AK. These two Lakes have a few dispersed campsites on them, one with a bear box.
Here are some pics.

The pack is from RUFFWEAR, it is called the Palisades pack. I really like it a lot. It connects to a vest and the bags are removable. It has two water bladders I use for flotation. So even when my dog's pack is full for travel, he still floats. I love the pack, it is durable and fits well.

I agree with Bob. Those are four spectacular shots. I gotta know how you took the shadow pic. You must have had your camera in one hand right?

I am guessing mounted, or stable camera with a remote in one hand. If not that, then sitting still and using the timer built into most cameras.
Very cool stuff.

I used my gopro camera to get this shot. I had it mounted on my thwart. It's actually a still from a short video I made.
