Happy New Year Everyone.
A New Year a new decade.
I hope everyone has a safe and healthy New Year.
I'm planning on an early June solo, area to be determined.
Then hopefully a group trip in August. Or another solo if the group won't work out. Again area to be determined.

The Spartans are still here. We have our reservation for a cabin at Rockwood again this coming summer. Anna wants to be sure she gets a trip up north before she heads off to college.
In the meantime, I will be having open heart surgery in four weeks, so I think there will be a lot of recuperation and rehab after that is accomplished.

Still here as the new year and new decade begins. Best wishes to Spartan2 for your upcoming your surgery and subsequent rehab.
No wilderness camping trips planned for 2020 just as in recent past years. However, just starting to plan renting a cabin off Gunflint Trail in August with two former Quetico tripping partners and, I hope, their spouse who have never been in BWCA or Quetico. Planning on doing easy day trips into the BWCA. Seems somewhat ironic to me, but I'll having to rent a suitable tandem now that my Mohawk Solo14 is only canoe I have left after selling the rest over the last several years.

Joy is a great teacher, but so is dispair. Wonder is a great teacher, but so is confusion. Hope is a great teacher, but so is disillusionment. And life is a great teacher, but so is death. To deny yourself any of those in any aspect is not experiencing life totally.

So cool to see the grit that comes before your glorious knives!
I'm still here and here's my workshop, looking unlike Karl's, but I also shape it with steel and I'm working minerals too.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

MichiganMan here as well. Great thread! I'll be heading back to the Q in 2020, not sure when or where. But I literally think about the Q every single day. Amazing the grip that place can have on one's soul.
Good luck Spartan2 with the surgery from a fellow Spartan. Prayers headed your way.

That's ok. People make strange decisions when gravity is pulling them up instead of down.

UPBOY is still around and doing fine. Will make the 70th trip around the sun in March, but still expect to make at least three BW trips this year. Looking forward to tripping with the grandkids now.
I can only hope that when I die, my wife does not sell my fishing equipment for what I told her I paid for it

Still hanging in here! No overnight paddle trips in 2019, just local waters. I cannot believe I said that. Where did the year go? 2020's gotta be better!

Thanks for the nice comments. My CLL has progress to to point I will need treatment. The good news is that it is treatable with oral drugs with good success. I should be able to continue paddling and tripping in the BWCA. I am fortunate that I live with in 400 miles of Mayo Clinic and get the best care in the world!

Happy new year to everyone. May your live wells be full and your health be good enough to get you there and back again.
2019 was a bust for me. Started out on a high note, I received 8-day use motor permits for Basswood via Prairie. Thought I would be in good shape with a hip replacement on March 29. Low and behold I went back into the hospital on April 26 with a staph infection. Another hip replacement on April 27th. The Doctor came in the next day and says that this one is not going to work either. He had to go back in on April 29 and put in an antibiotic infused spacer to keep the area open while he killed the infection. I would not be able to walk again til he put in the new hip on July 29.
On top of that, when I left the hospital on May 6th, I had an IV. I had to inject myself with nine syringes of antibiotics per day. Over 400 in six weeks.
The hard part was I had to cancel my permits...except for 2. lol
I had my daughters hook up my boat to the truck and off to my buddy's in Minneapolis. Spent the night there and he hooked up the boat to his truck and off to Ely we went. We fished Basswood for two days and caught our limit of eyes and smallmouth. Drove back to Minneapolis, then on to illinois the next day. He had never been to the BWCA before. I'm sure he loaded up on Kaylins jerk minnow in pearl. The smallmouth were off the charts.
So, the point of this is... SOMETIMES YOU JUST GOTTA DO WHAT YOU GOT TO DO. On December 31, I put 2019 to bed.
Before I went to bed, I mailed the paperwork back to my lawyer. Turns out the staple gun or staples were causing a staph infection on lots of people.

Sort of here, but it's all Plan B for now. Car camping and wandering around the SNF, telling myself this is what I would see if I got out of the canoe and looked around the woods. A few forest roads lead to possible lakes I could get into and camp without
having to portage or paddle too far.
Good to see the site is still going strong.

Having had a related form of lymphoma (fNHL) I just wanted to wish you good luck with your treatment. As you said, the oral drugs have had good results for CLL. Glad you can keep paddling.
And good luck to Spartan2 on her surgery and to everyone else facing medical problems and recoveries to keep enjoying life and canoe country.

Tried to do this a few days ago but it was impossible to get the photo right from my phone. Photo was taken on 12/31/2019 between Flash and Griddle lakes just outside of the wilderness.

Hello fellow paddlers - we are excited for a new year. Added a couple new canoes in the 16' range, hopefully the day trippers will appreciate the lighter weight. I'm planning a trip from Gunflint Lake to Rose in May, solo or maybe a friend from the cities will come up. Cannot wait for open water!

I hope you will come back soon with your new hips. I had new hip replaced and neck disc surgery a few years ago. One year later I was carrying the pack again. I have my fingers crossed that you will be soon back to your former self.
I hope to get up there another time this year. This discussion thread is so motivational and heart-warming.
Best wishes all.

After taking 2019 off due to my son's wedding, which was in the fall when we are usually on a BWCA trip, I'm looking forward to another great September trip with my son and some of his friends. This year we're going to do the Cross Bay to Poplar route. 4 days 3 nights. The plan is for the first night on Long Island Lake, the second night on Winchell Lake and the last night on Caribou Lake. I can't wait. I hear this is a great route. Happy 2020 to all.

Still here, but probably not going to do a back country paddle in the BWCA this year.
Memorial day timeframe will see my wife and me on Isle Royale with some time in Grand Marais or maybe something on the Gunflint for a night or two.
The only paddling trip on the docket so far is six days on the Upper Missouri through White Canyon and the Badlands.

Happy New Year, everyone,
In 2019 I got back on track with two BWCAW trips, which offset my 2018 shutout. Wanted to schedule a 5-day solo last year, but couldn't find the right five days around other obligations. I'll be studying my maps to find an area I've yet to visit and add those lakes to my career "visited lakes" list.
Good luck, good weather, good fishing to all in 2020 and remember that safety always comes first.

Hello Everyone,
It’s been a very long last three years and I haven’t been as active as I should have been. Many health issues tended to ruin my best made plans. The trip I made in 2017 ended with a 9 day in the hospital for acute renal failure. After that the doc said no more trips. That really was a hit to the ——... Anyway I’m back to the board and am looking forward to offering advice and helping others where I can with my many years of experience.
To everyone headed north to the BWCAW for their trips this year enjoy the heck out of them and don’t forget to take that portage break to take some pictures.

Solo to the Gunflint side for the first time last September and I think I might try it again this year. Or maybe the west side again. Who knows? Happy paddling everyone!

Checking in! Boy Scout trip planned for July. Three groups - one group will be approximately an 80 mile (paddle and portage) trip, one group focused on fishing and the last group going to Johnson Falls and some Canada viewing. Can't wait to introduce a bunch more people to this awesome area!

I am still here, but I need to stop by more often this year. My husband and I have plans to get out in May. Nothing definite right now but its in the plans this year.
Last year, we bought a cabin near Ely and spent a lot of time moving and settling in that we did not get a trip in last year. Might still try to do some ice fishing on Snowbank before my fishing license expires.
Looking forward to 2020 and hanging out with some of you!

Quietly here. Did not post too many times this year, but I check the site about five times a week. Always impressed at how many people are on this site and have been for years. Also glad to see all the new people joining.
Planning on two trips for sure, and maybe a third, in 2020.

I couldn't even find a pic from last years trip to share as they are still on my GoPro. I'm still checking in but haven't had much time to post anything. They boys want to go back to Insula this year so that's where we'll be in June. Happy paddling in 2020!

Still here. Still lurking more than posting. A little late to checking in as we just rang in the New Year in Dublin. As usual we have lots of time planned in canoe country for 2020 and we often add in long weekends when we can get away.
We'll be up at the end of the Gunflint Trail for Valentine's weekend and get in plenty of snowshoeing and skiing. Car camping in the Teardrop over Memorial Day weekend at Sawbill. 4th of July week somewhere... likely a canoe trip but maybe just Teardrop camping. I haven't planned it yet. Hubby & I may have to play rock, paper scissors for that one. I prefer full blown canoe trip and he's leaning towards Teardrop. Rockwood cabin week in August with friends from Chicago. Sept canoe trip with hubby & Luft out of Big Sag - looping through Red Rock and out American Point.
Getting excited about all of the trips just listing them... might have to pull out my maps when I get home from work tonight :-)
Happy New Year!

Oh, ducks! How can that baby be 18 months old already?? He is so cute, and it seems that Bruin is a suitable name. He looks quite tough and ready to tackle the wilderness! Thanks for posting a photo--I have been wondering how he was growing.

I've been focusing much of my attention on hiking + finishing the Superior Hiking Trail, and will finish this year! [YEAH]
We also have a BWCA trip planned this summer with friends + all the kids (3-15 yrs).
That should be fun.

Wow over three weeks into the new year and I've just checked in. I guess that says it all. No complaints here. Just full of hope for a new year.
Been a while since I've BW tripped or since my canoe has touched water, but life is looking good. Turn 70 this year and have put some cancer issues behind me with one still ongoing, but under control. Lower back problems are showing improvement and have been talking with the old canoe partner about a trip this year. No set plan at this time.
We have gone round and round about how to do this and this stubborn Norwegian is saying if this might be my last trip I want to actually enjoy the portage, paddle, camp experience from different places like we used to. The last few years I've gotten into improving my photography and would plan this trip around taking my gear and having a blast that way.
2020 is a work in progress as am I. Still love getting out my paddling CDs from the One Match Band and singing along. I guess my singing is a work in progress too.
Have a great year all.

Missing the snow down here in Central Indiana.... Anyone have any to share? Looks like another great annual trip with dad (PaddleIN) coming in August. Heading out through 27 to Jordan, then on to Sedative for our first PMA experience. this will make 13 or 14 trips for me, and several more for dad, he is the best paddling partner i could ask for.

hello all, yep still lurking. heading to texas soon. looking forward to our new travels and destinations, it's a HUGE country.
oh, i'll be parked at campsites up north this year with my solo, tandem, mountain bikes as well.
we plan on driving around Superior, pulling our home on wheels.
another trip to moab utah, for some tremendous mtbiking, and then off to california to see carol's friends.
have a great, safe paddling season, and when you see our tab, stop in for a beverage. cheers :)

Checking in. Still around. Gained a few more pounds and a couple more more metal parts. Would love to do a trip but I think it's going to be a camp ground trip or cabin trip. Don't think my body will allow me to go into the back country anymore.
I will get all the rest I need when I am dead.
