Very nice trip report - I'm glad you enjoyed your first trip. Hopefully there will be many more to come. There are lots of other great routes - just keep reading here for more info. Check out the link from Seagull Outfitters website. Other Routes

Great trip report!

Seagull lake itself has very good fishing. Fishguts and I fished out Quetico this June :)

I've been hearing alot of slow fishing reports from your week and the one prior.

Glad you enjoyed your first trip! I would recommend a longer trip.. 5 days or so. There are lots of places to travel to just read some trip reports and look at maps to help you decide on your next trip.

Welcome to bwca.com!

Thanks for taking the time to share your trip report. Sounds like you found the solitude, peace 'n' quiet you were searching for?

I think you'll find that no matter how many trips you do, or have done? You will learn something new on each trip. Better ways of doing things, better gear, what works, what doesn't .........it goes on & on. Hopefully those future lessons won't have to come the hard way? :)

Welcome to the site QuietTime and Thank You for your service. Sounds to me like you "newbies" did very well on your first trip.

Next trip? Stick to the Gunflint side, usually much less crowded than the Ely side. As for fishing, even the best lakes can be slow if the weather isn't cooperating. Keep the lines wet and you'll get them eventually.

Nice. Thanks.

Everyone learns a lot on their first trip. On your next trip you will be 75% up the learning curve. As TB said, you'll learn something every trip it's just that percentage decreases.

Andy suggested you stay on the Gunflint side, so you might want to try Lizz Lake Entry Point. Head to Horseshoe (as well as Gaskin, Winchell and that area). Easy portages. Decent Fishing. Generally smaller lakes.

I'm glad to hear that the trip finally became a reality for you and lived up to expectations. It sounds like you really enjoyed it. Maybe you'll get to do a longer trip next time, see some new territory. I've changed a lot of the things I did on my first and second trips and left a lot of stuff I took. Especially after going solo on the second trip. I quickly came to the same conclusion as you regarding food and cooking - simplify, simplify, simplify. It's not for everybody, but works for me. Oatmeal and coffee for breakfast, ProBars for lunch, trail mix for snacks, dehydrated meals for dinner. All meals are add boiling water, eat out of pouch, put pouch in garbage, wipe spoon clean, done. Small stove, small pot, insulated mug, spoon, meal cozy. I do take Gatorade to drink - mostly for additional calories and electrolytes. Yeah, I'm ready for steak and ice cream when I come out :).

Thanks everyone for the comments and advice. I loved reading the other trip reports before I left, so I figured I needed to pass on the favor. I am already planning the next trip. I am considering larger lakes and routes that include better fishing. Its exciting, I don't think you can make a bad choice.
