Entry Point 32 - South Kawishiwi River
South Kawishiwi River entry point allows overnight paddle only. This entry point is supported by Kawishiwi Ranger Station near the city of Ely, MN. The distance from ranger station to entry point is 21 miles. Access is a 140-rod portage to the river.

We got f***** by the Hog.

Apparently, the water was low and it was a real slog to get through. Make sure the water is high. We have 10ft Pelican Mustang kayaks and do a lot of rec. kayaking. We made it out to Perent Lake, had a late lunch at the closest site, and made it back to the entry point in about 6 hours. The guide at Sawbill outfitters said he had done it a while back and it took him 45 min one way. We do like to meander and bird watch while we kayak so that contributed to the length, but the paddle was tough. The beaver dams weren't too bad, on a couple we paddled really fast and launched over them and slid down, but these are pretty big dams and some we had to get out and pull the kayaks over. There were several canoers and from watching them, I think the kayaks were easier. Then the reeds and grass. Because the water was low it was pretty mucky. Several times we ended up taking our paddles apart and using them to push into the creek bottom and push ourselves along. This was exhausting, and I wondered if a canoe would be better for the leverage. We almost gave up after a few hours but we were so close to the lake we drove through. The way back was slightly easier mentally because we knew what we were in for and even though we had go up the beaver dams it was still much faster on the way back. Enter point is down a hill with big steps, not too bad. One short portage, there are two paths, one rocky and one trail, take the trail. 5-6 dams from what I remember that span the whole width of the creek, big dams. Beautiful paddle : ) Would only do again if I knew the water was high. At the end we joked that we had gotten f***** by the Hog.
