Day 6 of 8
Saturday, June 13, 2015
Dave and I left Duluth at 5:00 headed for Ely. We got held up outside of Duluth due to a forgotten camera, and in Two Harbors as the McDonald's there doesn't open until 6:00. We had picked up our permit on Friday at Frost River, so only needed a quick stop at TGO for leeches and we were feet wet by 8:30 at Mudro. I was quickly reminded why I would rather be in the Quetico...every portage looked like a yard sale until we got to Tin Can Mike. We leap frogged the portages with a nice couple from the twin cities all the way to LBF. I don't normally visit with other groups, but I think we were all glad to have just a bit of company. Horse River was a pretty neat paddle, but I wouldn't want to do it in dry weather. We took a rock to the bow about half way down that I am still repairing as I type this. We made LBF at 3:00, and took our time admiring the falls. We continued north on the river and took the site just east of Frolic Lake, north of the Pictographs. We were so impressed with the picto's, that we went back for another look after dinner. Beautiful travel day![paragraph break][paragraph break]

Day 14 of 8
Sunday, June 14, 2015 Up at the crack of 6:30, and got ready for another travel day. You can tell from the Table Rock picture that the water was pretty high. We fished all day while traveling, and spent some extra time at Big Current, but only caught a couple. [paragraph break]

[paragraph break] We ended up taking the site NW of Friday Bay, site 1881 on the BWCA.com map. This was plenty big for us, and would give us good access to Argo, Friday, and Saturday Bays. We cooked a late lunch of bacon wrapped walleye, and hunkered down for the first thunder storm of the trip.[paragraph break]
Day 19 of 8
Wednesday, June 17, 2015 Up at 5:30 and off to Argo again. After catching 8 walleyes over 20" on the way to the portage, we had to stop fishing and get moving. Insane morning for walleyes! We were blessed with glass calm water on Argo, along with hungry trout and smallies. We caught trout on everything we tried. Tail Dancers, Hot-n-Tots, spoons, and Shad Raps. When one of us would get a trout on, the other would reel in and start casting jigs for small mouth, catching 2 or 3 by the time the trout was in. Just a fantastic day of fishing. We baked trout again at the campsite on the north end by the portage to Darky, then headed back to Crooked.[paragraph break]
Day 26 of 8
Tuesday, June 16, 2015
Today seemed like a good day to explore Crooked a bit more, and we headed over to Saturday bay. Did well on walleyes all day, mostly trolling. My #7 Perch Taildancer was once again proving to be the hot lure. We had a shore lunch on a cool little pine island in the central area of the bay. It was all pine with a duff floor and no underbrush. It was a great place to get out of the sun for a while. We spent the rest of the day poking around the islands between Friday and Saturday Bays on the Canadian side. A great day of exploring! [paragraph break]

Day 28 of 8
Wednesday, June 17, 2015 Up at 5:30 and off to Argo again. Day 33 of 8
Thursday, June 18, 2015 Woke up early with plans to fish walleyes on the Canadian side of Crooked again, but the 15-20 mph winds kept us on shore. After cooking breakfast and debating what to do for the day, we decided that the wind would allow us to head out a day early through Friday bay at a more leisurely pace than planned. We packed up and hit the water in the wind at about 10:00, and made a bee-line for Friday bay. Traveled through Papoose, Chippewa, Niki, and Wagosh lakes before stopping for lunch at the lone campsite at about 3:00. After getting well fed and rested, we opted to continue on and take the mile portage to Gun to look for a better campsite. Finding no sites on Gun, we continued on to the east site on Fairy. It was a gorgeous site, but we only had enough energy left to cook up some dehydrated chili, make camp, and watch bobbers.[paragraph break]
Day 35 of 8
Friday, June 19, 2015 We broke camp in the morning to try to get a campsite closer to Mudro for our exit on Saturday. All sites were taken on Boot, and we only found one very abused site on Fourtown that would have to do for the night. It was the one on the east side of the lake that a short portage to Horse goes directly through. It was very strange, but somewhat entertaining, watching people portage 20 feet from our fire trying hard to ignore us. We had an older gentleman wander over to the fire to accept a cup of coffee, followed by his two sons. We spent a couple of hours chatting by the fire, and it turned out that we had mutual friends. I think they were just trying to get away from their 9 girls spread among 2 sites for a while! In any case, it was a pleasant reintroduction to civilization. We spent the evening fishing the pond between Fourtown and Horse, and finished off the evening with a dinner of Mojakka and bannock. Possibly the last of the wine, too.[paragraph break][paragraph break]
Day 44 of 8
Saturday, June 20, 2015
Lots of rain and T-storms overnight. Packed up everything wet, and back to civilization. Until next time...
