Thanks so much for these comments! I came home from this retreat time really refreshed and invigorated.

I agree about the sleep system. I think mine would have been ok, but my daughter's was not, which is odd since our bags have the same rating. Still, when I go again I'll plan better for that. I know that she does not stay warm as I do when I sleep....not sure if that is a gender thing or not.

I appreciate that comment.

Very nice report. Thank you for sharing. My first trip to the BWCA from the East Side was in August of 1986 and I went thru WCB. My best friend from college worked there as a pontoonist.

That's cool! Hannah loves it there so much.

Good report and great Pictures. Awesome family trip.
Letting the fire go out is the best way in my opinion. I like my sleep too much.
I came out on Tuesday, it seemed like it snowed 4" while we pulled out. Could only go 30 mph on 61 from Grand Marais to Lutsen

Cool story SJoe! Thanks for sharing that.

I used the trip for a sermon illustration this past weekend and it went pretty well.

Someday I would love to do something like this, after I get some more experience outside in the winter. Wool really rules.

Your parental instinct story reminded me of a time when my 12-year old brother and I were camped up in the mountains and the temperature dropped to some awful number as the polar vortex rushed off the glaciers of Mt. Rainier and over our tent. I was warm, but my brother wasn't, so we ended up in the same sleeping bag and I woke up about every hour and make sure he was OK. And no sleeping pad either!

Glad you had a good time. I'll bet it was quiet up there. Thanks for posting the report.

really great story. struggles, triumphs, setbacks, accomplishments....and learning along the way. glad you had fun. seagull is a big lake that seems really huge in the winter. fresh trout for meals is an added treat.
sharing this experience with your daughter is important. it would have been fun if the other two guys had come, it would have changed the dynamic some, but i'm sure your daughter will never forget this special trip with her dad.
thanks for posting your trip report. for some reason the pictures didn't come through for me :)

now, make sure you set a budget for winter camping gear, and space it out over the next year.

Any pics?

Thanks to you all. I just uploaded the pictures. Hannah looks beautiful as ever,
Bill appears as capable as he was and I look older and more tired in each one. I hope you enjoy them and thanks for the support!

the photos are awesome! love the waterbottle/knife photo. and the smiles tell the same story you told. looks like winter will last awhile up there yet, you could go out again!

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. My conversations with Dan Cooke and Bill Sherck were a big inspiration to me as I looked at trying the winter gig.

Great story. It's wonderful to be able to share times like this with your daughter.

Glad you had a good time. What good fortune you had to take a trip with your daughter.

It was concerning when you felt you needed to keep the fire going all night which is never helpful for ones sleep. Your sleep system should keep warm at those temperatures. If not you need to think about what you could change or add to make things warmer.
