Trip Introduction:
First trip for my wife. My 3rd trip in. Decided to try something relativily easy based on reports from this fine site.

After unexpectedly being able to get away for a weekend we found that there were several permits left for Hog Creek. We packed up some food, gave the tent a little air, then headed up for a few days.

This was the first trip for my Wife and my 3rd. Except for a bit of rain, it was a wonderful adventure trying to work together on the long paddle in. Hog creek has many twists and turns, several beaver dams, and fortunately only one short portage.

After almost 2 hours on the creek, we broke out onto Perent Lake just in time for the rain showers to begin. Wife wasn't too happy, but the weather was generally warm and the showers were short. We kept to the west edge of the lake and many of the sites were already taken, but we ended up finding the last one on the west side with beautiful frontage out looking at the lake.

She was a trooper in getting things unpacked and getting the tent set up in between showers. We ventured out into the woods, collected our firewood and got some dinner. I admit I was a bit lazy in setting up the rope for the food bag. I couldn't find two trees easily, so I figured for the first night I would risk just putting it up a single tree as far I as I could get the rope to go. In the morning, my wife was eating a granola bar when I woke up. I congratulated her on getting the food bag down. She said, "no I just reached up and grabbed this from the bag". Guess I didn't do too good a job...my wife is 5'2".

The day was great, cool and again with occasional showers, but we were able to get out and fish a little, explore some of the islands and just relax without he kids. Caught a walleye from the shore and had it cooked up in about 15 minutes. Wife thought it the best fish ever. Kind of hard to get any fresher.

Trip out was easier, although one of the beaver dams was a challenge. We had to get out and rope the canoe over it...this of course after trying like the keystone canoeists to get a running start at it and go over that way. No dice.

Long drive back to the Cities, but the stop at Green Mill in Duluth for Pizza made it tolerable. She is excited to go back with out boys this time.
