"This trip will be taking off from Fall Lake up through Newton Falls portage onto Pipestone Bay campsites. 3 day, 2 night trip into the wilderness.

We knew the weather was going to turn, so we got out early. and BOY we we right! S SW Winds and rain picked up right as we were nearing UBF Horse Portage. We were not expecting rain the whole weekend, so we kept thinking it was going to stop. NOPE! it just kept going and getting worse... This portage crushed my soul... everything was wet, the portage never stopped.... I began to reevaluate my life choices and was going to accept that this is where i was going to die. Whatever the paddle planner tells you, add 2 hrs, I thought i would get through in 2-3 hrs, 6-7 hours later we emerged near 1548 and claimed the site next to LBF. One of you angels split logs and left a pile of wood, GOD BLESS YOU! the rain stopped and we enjoyed 2 nights on the best campsite in the BWCA, WOW the falls at night, the lookout over the river, and the Pictographs made this feel very special. 
We decided to Enjoy a OFF day, and had a leisure paddle to the Pictographs, Swam at LBF, and just needed a break from the Basswood paddle and soul crushing horse portage. our spirits and energy were restored and completely fell in love with this area. We did replenish the wood a little bit before we left for Fourtown the next day. Paying it forward hopefully for the next group
Since we stayed at LBF for two days, we had some ground to make-up, Instead of Horse Lake, and a little scared of Sandpit Portage, we decided to Fourtown, Going upstream through the horse river was not hard at all. Lining the canoe was a lot of fun, and the portaged were easy peezy, Do not try to line it if there is a portage, we took a 20 min portage and made it into a 45 min shoot show, but ill blame the member of my group for heading that direction.... lesson learned, if there is a portage, take it. Fourtown was busy, and we were lucky to get a site near the Mudro Portage . That night we got to see the northern lights, a real treat. 
Ok Last day, for some reason i thought fourtown was the easier portage..... dead wrong.... what a tough portage to end the trip. I would take Sandpit twice over than head though Fourtown... But we made it, all alive and well and bumps and bruises and great memories to take with us. Lots a fun!. I will never again do that Horse portage though, better to go up and down the horse river.... IMHO....
