Trip Introduction:
Goal was to get to Sagus and back in 4 nights, see if the walleye hype was real and do a trip that wasn't a basecamp trip. Disclaimer: we traveled fast, partially due to favorable winds most of the trip (we aren't great paddlers). We also single portaged, my wife is a portage machine and I'm just stubborn enough to try and keep up.
Day 1 of 4
Tuesday, June 09, 2026 10:12-Departed EP37, arrived at Malberg site 1056 in under 4 hrs for a lunch break. 2:08-Left Malberg site, paddled East to skip portage 562, then back down to River Lake. Settled on Beaver Lake site 1967 at 5:20 Travel time: 7hrs, 8 min. Est. miles paddled: 14.6 Portages: 12 @ est. 609 rods Notes: Loved both sites visited, caught smallies from our site on Beaver Lake, gentle tail wind most of the day, portages mostly well maintained and manageable. Bugs were incredibly mild.
Day 2 of 4
Wednesday, June 10, 2026 9:38-Departed site on Beaver Lake, arrived at Sagus site 1912 by 1:15 Travel time: 3 hrs, 37 min. Est. miles paddled: 6.1 Portages: 7 @ est 400 rods Notes: Only saw occupied sites on Adams (Island) and the other good site on Sagus. Got the channel site, which we really liked. Fished enough for a dinner and lunch meal, which didn't take long. Walleyes didn't disappoint. Portages a bit more challenging especially between Boulder and Cap.
Day 3 of 4
Thursday, June 11, 2026 12:15-Departed site on Sagus, headed East (wanted to go West through Alice but a strong West wind scratched that plan). Got to Makwa by 3:45 but felt ambitious and continued on and settled at site 1050 just South of Kivaniva Lake by 6:21 Travel Time: 6 hrs, 6 min. Est miles paddled: 7.3 Portages: 13 @ est 949 rods Notes: Remote to say the least. Portages overgrown (expected), did not see another human during all of our travels, more moose and bear tracks on the portages than human tracks. Beautiful area and if you want to feel all alone, this is your route!
Day 4 of 4
Friday, June 12, 2026 8:20-Left site 1050 and headed towards EP 37. Windy day from the West, made some paddling challenging. Got to Polly by 10:04, then made it to EP 37 by 1:10. Travel Time: 5 hrs, 12 min. Est miles paddled: 13.8 Portages: 8 @ est 491 rods Notes: Site 1050 would be a 10/10 if it weren't for a complete lack of tent pads. Otherwise we loved it. Travel home wind was tough, especially in some of the streams where wind tunnels through.
[paragraph break] Total Trip Details Time out: 3 days, 3 hrs, 22 min Travel time: 22 hrs, 3 min Lakes visited: 37 (24 different ones) Est miles paddled: 41.8 Portages: 40 @ est 2449 rods (7.65 miles)
