Entry Point 49 - Skipper & Portage Lakes

Skipper and Portage Lakes entry point allows overnight paddle only. This entry point is supported by Gunflint Ranger Station near the city of Grand Marais, MN. The distance from ranger station to entry point is 28 miles. Access is a 320-rod portage from Poplar Lake or a 230-rod portage from Iron Lake. This area was affected by blowdown in 1999.

This was the second annual “Pops and Gramps Take the Kids in to the Bush for One Last Adventure before School Starts” BWCA trip. I had heard good things about Caribou, Horseshoe and the surrounding area so the plan was to spend four days exploring, fishing and goofing off but…

…it was not to be. Things came up and this trip will have to wait until next summer. We (the entire family) did get to spend a long weekend with some great friends near Two Rivers, WI (just slightly south, east of the Gunflint Trail;); in lieu of an actual BWCA trip report, I submit the following: [paragraph break] The trip to Two Rivers from Minneapolis took about five hours and was neither eventful nor scenic; guess I expected this stretch of Wisconsin to be prettier. We are visiting two of our oldest and dearest friends, Griff and Britt. Griff and I met as high school freshman and became fast friends. During our junior years we both met and began dating the women who, a little later in life, would become our wives. 18 years later and the four of us are still thick as thieves. Our friends live on a pretty little chunk of heaven out side of town and soon after arriving we put the kids out to pasture, what ensued was… [paragraph break] A bit of this, [paragraph break] [paragraph break] Saw one of these, [paragraph break] [paragraph break] A bunch of this, [paragraph break] [paragraph break] Spent some time here, [paragraph break] [paragraph break] My favorite part of the trip, [paragraph break] [paragraph break] T’was not the B’dub, just a good time spent with great people.
