Trip Report

Entry Date: August 24, 2012
Entry Point: Lake One
Number of Days: 4
Group Size: 4

Trip Introduction:
This was my first canoe trip into the BWCA and my first time camping in more than a decade. Our goal was to base camp on Insula and conduct 1-2 day trips for fishing and exploring.

Day 1 of 4

Friday, August 24, 2012 Put in at Kawishiwi Lodge on Lake One and transited as follows-> Lake Two-> Lake Three-> Lake Four-> Lake Hudson Lake-> Lake Insula. . We arrived at our back-up choice, Campsite 1337, ate lunch and made camp for the rest of the trip.

Day 2 of 4

Saturday, August 25, 2012 After breakfast we packed lunch and fishing gear as we were off to catch walleye on South Hope Lake, which is deep inside the Fungus Lake PMA and within the area hit by the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire. The day was a bit windy and overcast, but it still produced my first walleye and a couple more for others in our party.

Day 3 of 4

Sunday, August 26, 2012 This day only two of us traveled afar. This time across Lake Insula, the bottom end of Lake Alice over to Fish Dance to see the petroglyphs. We then proceeded to fish the down stream side of three sets of rapids that are right near Portages: P580, P587, and P589. Each of the spots provided at least one good small mouth bass.

Day 4 of 4

Monday, August 27, 2012 Early pack up of camp so we can get going before the portages get too busy. Hearty breakfast of french toast bagels and the rest of our syrup. Shortcut across Insula using an unmarked portage then to Hudson, 4, 3, 2, 1 and back to the Kiwishiwi Lodge.
