quote rockstaranon: "quote steven:

You can make it from Sawbill to N. Temperance in a day. I remember the 140rd portage south out of Cherokee was a tough one though. How do you get from Homer to N. Temperance? Can you go up the Vern River? Or, through Brule?
"

My initial route was to go up the Vern River, as I really wanted a to do some river paddling, but after speaking with a very knowledgeable person at Sawbill yesterday, I was told that the Vern River is mostly unnavigable, and rarely traveled, especially when water level is low. I've changed the route to Brule ep and that should be much easier. I'm just hoping the wind on Brule doesn't give us too much trouble."

You were smart not to paddle the Vern River. I paddled the entire river with a group of "at risk" 8th grade boys and girls. Much of it could not be paddled. We went in June when the water levels were reasonable, but the Vern does not carry much water through much of the area. To compound the problem, heat records were set for that time period with temps. reaching 105 degrees F. It took us 8 hours to travel the river. There were no portages around the boulder fields which made it very difficult.

we traved very leisurely... first night we camped on Sawbill then 2 nights on cherokee. you shouldn't have a problem making it in a day.
we stayed at the southern-most site on n. temperance. it was a so-so site. lots of blow-down, but good tent pads and boat landing."

I did Sawbill->Temperance->Baker route in late June and stayed at the same site on N. Temperance. All I can say is I am glad I wasn't there when the storm hit that knock down most of the trees. Not the prettiest site anymore.

quote rockstaranon: "Couple questions. How leisure was your pace? We're leaving homer lake ep next thursday about 8 and are trying to make north temperance by 1pm. I'm just wondering how realistic this plan is as you said it took 4 days to get from sawbill to north temperance. Secondly, did you camp on the north most island campsite on north temperance? If you so, how was it? That campsite is our main goal. Love the pics and the report. Awesome moose shots! Thanks!!"
