Sounds like a great trip. Thanks for sharing the fantastic photos! Good reminder of what a great eye and proper equipment can do.

I’m not quite sure what you are referring to when you wrote that you passed a nice rock formation with some iron in it, but the following pictures show cliffs with colonies orange lichens growing on them.

I guess I had thought it was iron. I was too busy shooting. Thank you for the clarification. Corrected report.

Beautiful photos. Thanks for putting that together.

What exposure do you use for the night sky shots? I have done some with a high ISO, large aperture opening and a several second shutter time. They called out okay but yours look better. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you and I thought about doing prints at some point. Last year I did make a BWCA calendar. Some Family and friends bought some and I sold the rest on Etsy. They went really quick. It was a limited 50 copy run though.

I have some other photos posted here but not all years. Some other photos are on my website. www.jeromebrill.com.

Again thanks.

Fantastic report and pictures. The night shots were just stunning, and is that the Aurora on the horizon?

Thanks. The green orange on the horizon was from the moon setting. It wouldn't be as prominent if I had the right lens. I was using my 16-35mm f/2.8. Had to really bring up the exposure in Lightroom and there was a lot of noise since I was at 4000 iso. Normally I wouldn't go this high but I was experimenting. Also when you do a lot of processing/noise reduction like that It kind of messes with the color. Maybe it looks good the way it is? It's up to interpretation. Next year I'll have a 24mm f/1.4 that I have on back-order. Hopefully some cleaner night shots.

Jerome, great report and some really nice shots. Love to see that commitment to photography up there. My buddy and I have made it a high priority on our trips and it takes a lot of our time. But it is so much fun and challenging.

If you like to look at others photos for fun or to get ideas, feel free to check out some of my trip reports - on a 4-5 day trip we will both usually shoot 800 to 1000 shots. The fun continues when I get home of course, looking through them all and seeing how many turned out really well.

Keep it up, great job.

Thank you. Exposure was different for each photo but It was around 15-25 seconds at about 1000 to 4000 ISO. I tried to stay on the lower end. All but one photo was taken on my 16-35 f/2.8 at f/2.8. Ideally you would want something like a f/1.8 or even f/1.4 lens. I have one ordered but it's on back-order.

The one photo with the streaks was a 5 minute exposure with my telephoto. That was at f/5.6.

In the end it depends on your lens and sensor. Mine is full frame and is good at low light. I also use a tripod, set my camera to electronic shutter, set a 2 to 10 second timer and then use a corded shutter button. All of this will reduce vibration and you'll get cleaner shots. Making sure your lens is in focus is critical too. Not all lenses will be sharp at infinity for stars. Most aren't. You may have to back off the focus a little. It's trial and error. The rest is editing and using some noise reduction/sharpening methods.

All of my night shot are just single images though. You can get some really really good ones by photo stacking and using a sky tracker. I haven't done this yet. Maybe someday.
