Trip Introduction:
Precursor: Prior to this trip I was in California ski bumming with some friends when I found a 1985 Wenonah Jensen 18' listed on marketplace for $500. I drove a few hours north to go pick it up, guy who sold it to me included 2 Gray Owl bent paddles! I hustled back to MN just in time for my 5/29 Lake one permit. Only thing was that my friend Dale wasn't going to get off of work until 6 that day, this was a problem as we live 4 hours away from Ely.

Day 1 of 3

Friday, May 29, 2026

11:00am Wake up, got back home at 2:30 the night prior. Needed to get my new canoe registered, went to the courthouse to get that done by around 12:30. Then I spent a few hours packing and planning food, Also cleaned the canoe pretty good just in case. The previous owners told me it hadn't been used in 3 years though so I wasn't too worried.

My friend Tristan rolled up to my house at around 4, we loaded everything into my car and headed up to Ely. The other vehicle Occupied by Dale and Caylissa left DL around 6:30.

Me and Tristan got to Ely around 9:30, Went to Voyageur North to get the permit and some leeches. Spent some time hanging around and headed to the Lake 1 public access. Got there around 10:30. Took the canoe out for a bit of a test ride in the dark. I wanted to be sure that we would have the ability to navigate and spot campsites. The almost full moon was helping with this a lot.

Dale and Caylissa rolled in at about 11:30, we all loaded our gear in and set off. Checked the time right before leaving, 11:50.

The water was so perfect and the moon was so bright, Absolutely no wind and no bugs out on the lake. Was awesome.

First we went to campsite 2302 which I thought would be taken, ( I was correct ). Then crossed the lake down to 1675, which was open. We set up our hammocks and hung our food, ( Tristan who had never set up this particular tent prior to this deemed that it was broken and slept on a rock). The crew was still pretty riled up so we stayed up for another hour or two.

Day 2 of 3

Saturday, May 30, 2026

Woke up around 11, was pretty windy. Had plans to go to Rifle Lake but just hung out and fished instead. Checked out some cool rocks Northeast of site 1675.

The sun started getting low so we got back to fishing, caught 3 walleye, 2 within keeping size. Went back to camp to cook em up and go to bed.

Day 3 of 3

Sunday, May 31, 2026

Last day- Crew had a bit of a lazy day just chilling around camp, did some bobber fishing and swimming. Around 4 we decided it was time to head back to the access and drive back to DL.
