Great trip (with our dog!), beautiful campsite on Canoe Lake

Report

I've been to the BWCA three times: first as a ninth grader, second with my two early teens kids, and now with my wife for her first time. We wanted to go later in September to avoid the mosquitoes--and we succeeded. We went in at EP 64 (East Bearskin), then Alder and then Canoe, where we camped for three nights. We wanted a basecamp, to spend the rest of time just relaxing or exploring. This late in the year there were few other people. We camped at site 700. Another pair of people at site 701 shared the lake with us. Site 700 was excellent. I did my homework, using a lot of information from BWCA.com, and others, too. Great view, lots of space, plenty of spots to put up the tent. We put up right next to the lake, so it was a little windy one night, but very comfortable underneath. We spent a good amount of time hunting for firewood. I think this is a very popular site during the season, so the wood seemed pretty picked over. Coming in with the canoe was a bit tricky, as others have noted. We pushed out a couple of times just a wee bit farther down, near where we pitched our tent. One of our days, we canoed to the opposite end of Canoe to hike the trail up to see Johnson Falls. Our dog was kind of tired by the time we got to Pine, and it was getting late, so after a bit of rest, we hiked back to the canoe. We did not get to see the Falls. The two portages on our trip, from East Bearskin to Alder, and from Alder to Canoe, were pretty easy and short. (That was the only other criterion for my wife (avoid the mosquitoes and keep the portages to a minimum, short and easy). Happy wife, happy life--she wants to come back next year.
