Entry Point 4 - Crab Lake & Cummings Lake

Crab Lake and Cummings from Burntside Lake entry point allows overnight paddle only. This entry point is supported by Kawishiwi Ranger Station near the city of Ely, MN. The distance from ranger station to entry point is 23 miles. Access from Burntside Lake with a 320-rod portage to Crab Lake. This area was affected by blowdown in 1999.

Nice report. Doesn't sound like you did any fishing, but had some great site seeing. Yes, on busy days, the 176 from the trailhead can seem like Grand Central Station. The muddy portage sounds like a real challenge.

I will try to add some pictures when I get them from three members who had cameras. None of us were fishermen, but we all enjoyed the scenery and serenity. The adventure is fun, too. The Slim to Fat portage was definitely a challenge, but I am glad we made it.
