On the Water- Monday July 20th-
On the water late considering how far we need to go today. Up the Horse river to the falls by 6pm. Started raining and NO campsites available. Mudrow-Alruss-Tin can Mike-Horse Lake-Horse River-Basswood. 13 miles by water. (not counting portages)
Tuesday July 21st-
Rain all night, all morning and all day. Went north by petroglyphs, table rock and the the Crocked Lake Narrows across Thursday bay to campsite. Basswood-Crooked Lake-Wednesday Bay-Thursday Bay. 11 miles in the rain.
Wednesday July 22nd-
Up early and calm winds to take advantage of, considering the big water we have to cross. Found beaver dam to lift over and did a portage from hell between Pandos lake and Chippewa Lake. VERY steep and slippery after rain. Many mud holes. Then the mile portage after Wagosh Lake to Gun Lake. Never saw another soul in a canoe or campsite the entire day! Thursday bay-Friday Bay-Pandos Lake-Chippewa Lake-Wagosh lake-Gun Lake. 11 miles by water.
Thursday July 23rd-
Finally had a dry night. got everything dry!!! A few portages today to Fourtown Lake campsite. Easy day by comparison. Gun Lake-Fairy Lake-Boot Lake-Fourtown Lake. 6 miles. Put the long miles at the first of the week for a buffer for contingencies!
Friday July 24th-
Last day. Stormed last night bad. A few portages today with one bad one between Fourtown Lake and Mudrow lake. To entry point by 1pm. Ready for a hot shower! 4 miles

Today we got up bright and early. We spent the night sleeping in the car in The parking lot of The Great Outdoors in order to get bait and be on the road as soon as possible. It got unbelievably cold last night. After buying our 1 1/2 lbs of leeches we were on our way to the entry point. After the drive, on which we saw numerous deer and grouse we made it to the Entry point. The first thing that happened was we bumped into CatfishKeith, for the first of several times on the trip. A very nice guy, He came to fish bass mostly. The route down the river was uneventful, a nice easy paddle. The one thing that stuck out was we noticed that the mayflies were begining to hatch- Bad news for us walleye guys. We saw lots and lots of deer along the river, a pattern we would continue to see for the rest of the trip.
We bumped into our first and only rangers after paddling all the way up the oyster river. The lady checked our permit and told us of the oncoming storm and pointed out the one site that was ocupied- the one we wanted. It was right next to the deepest part of the lake and throwing smelt off the campsite for lakers. We found a site with a sandy beach and camped there. As soon as camp was set up it started to rain. I threw out a line with a smelt on it and got one bite. I made a dinner of rice and beans, Maybe I should say TRIED to make a dinner of rice and beans. It came out burnt and under done. We went to bed early and waited out a big thunderstorm.
Today we got up with the sun for a little lake trout fishing. It was cloudy and the day had intermitent sprinkles. We did one drift in front of the opening to the big bay and landed a single laker. He was taken on a orange and silver little cleo jiged under the boat.
Since we had our lunch fish and the wind was kicking up on the main lake we went to do some pike fishing. I quickly proceded to catch a pike around 38 inches on a firetiger chatterfrog. we also caught a few smaller ones as well.
after we went back to camp and cooked up our laker lunch- panfried in my moms secret recipe- it started to rain. We threw out some smelt from camp with no luck. at around dusk my friend gut hooked a smallmouth and we ate it for dinner along with some pasta- lake trout is much better in my opinion.
Today we left agnes for hopes of beter fishing on LLC. On one of the portages Isaqw some of the most beautiful damselflies I have ever seen. they were iradescent green or blue with lace black wings. They were stunning. Here we did find much better fishing, but still had little luck with the walleyes. We caught numerous decent pike and a few walleyes. We also got into a school of crappies. We ate a meal of 2 walleye and one small gut hooked pike today with a side of potatoes and onions. Very good.
Last night something was walking around our campsite. My guess is a deer or something along that lines, althought the dog didnt mind it. We had a firefly in the tent last night as well, it was pretty neat.Today the fishing was nowhere near as good as yeasterday. I caught and released a few tiny walleyes and a few pike. We also caught a few nice crappies. we bumped into Keith again and talked to him for a while. He had been doing prety good for bass. He is a realy cool guy. Today was our last shore fish meal- we had a pike for dinner with onions and our last potato.
We packed up today and left from LLC. On one of the portages we met someone who had their leeches stolen. (We also met someone on our first day who had the same thing happen.) while paddling into agnes just above the portage that bypasses the falls we watched a young man catch a little walleye- his first fish of the trip- we planed on staying at nina moose for the night but the mayfly hatch was going on and we didnt catch much so we called it in a half day early. On the way out we ran into a cow moose up to its midsection in the Nina moose river. It was very cool.
After stopping at DQ in ely I called my mother and learned that the night I left someone had broken into our house and stolen 2 expensive cameras and a good amount of cash. All while my mother and little sister slept. Aparantly something scared them away beacuse they had a case of beer they were planning on stealing outside the basement door.- Kids these days- Thank god for those vicious kittens we have!
