Entry Point 1 - Trout Lake

Trout Lake entry point allows overnight paddle or motor (25 HP max). This entry point is supported by La Croix Ranger Station near the city of Cook, MN. The distance from ranger station to entry point is 30 miles. Access from LakeVermilion via 60-rod canoe portage or 180-rod portage that allows the use of portage wheels. This area was affected by blowdown in 1999.

Nice Report. Nice Canoe. Funny Name. I grew up alot in South Dakota and we take Buffalo serious..lol

Freshwater is delicious! Saltwater not so much..

Thanks, I always enjoy trip reports, especially solos, and especially first solos. First solos are such a singular learning experience. It sounds like you had a pretty nice one...aside from the usual taking too much stuff :).

Good looking boat! Was also wondering if you considered using a kayak paddle? I used one for the first time in my solo boat last year and it was wonderful. It saves energy imo.

I use a Hennessy Asym with oversize hex fly. Ilove it.
As to the kayak paddle; what do you use?

It's a Bending Branches "Slice" at 260 cm. I had a 240 but traded up for the longer one and it's just perfect. I carry a single blade as backup and for fishing or use in small streams or rivers.


There's a seperate section here for hammockers. I'm not sure if I've seen you in there but if not you can find it on the main page.
