New Trip Report posted by Shug

Trip Name: Sioux Hustler Trail Loop Backpack Trip.

Entry Point: 9

Had my eye on this 30+ mile loop called the Sioux Hustler Trail for a spell now. It is in a remote part of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area 35 miles North of Ely, Minnesota along the Echo Trail. The trail is primitive, and is not well-maintained and runs from the Little Indian Sioux River to Hustler Lake then on up to Pageant Lake and back down.

So Alex Trail Eyes, Strung Out and myself headed out in some 39º rainy, wet and windy weather. That is always a challenge.
This trail is not marked by any signage...just rock cairns and sawn logs so good trail skills are required along with good maps and compass skills. Remain vigilant.
Some of the most gorgeous tread I have ever walked upon as the trail is lightly traveled due to it's remoteness.
Whoooooo Buddy))))))

I'll enjoy watching this one, 'cause Sioux Hustler is my favorite getaway hike in the Bdub (in part due to it being a loop), and also because your videos are just fun to watch!

Wow I admire the tenacity of that hike with the temps and the wind. You saw and reported on some beautiful area. When we camped on Shell Lake last year two of our group walked part of the trail while I fished. They said it was a really nice walk where they went (first week of June). I loved the Devil's Cascade and it looks like you did too! Great report (video) and thanks for sharing. I learn a lot from you on the nuances of lightweight camping. Bapabear

It was a chilly challenge at times....but so worth going. Pack was about 26 ponds fully loaded with food and water. Brought some extra clothes since it is shoulder season and glad I did. Used them all!

Loved the video Shug. Beautiful area fer sure! Your commentary is educational as well as entertaining. Having never backpacked in the BW, your report provided a good perspective on this travel method. I'd like to try it someday. Thanks.

Loved the report! Totally different perspective than from the canoe, makes me want to try hiking. You also make me want to try hanging. Thanks for the report!

Thankee for taking the time to check out the video everyone. It is a different perspective.
Though I want to get on those islands. Packraft in my future perhaps. Then I can hybrid the BWCA.

Great video, again. Really enjoy them.

I think TonyYarusso on this board got a packraft, I'm not sure. I've really wanted one for a long time, but I just cant make up my mind to do it. Problem is, I don't enjoy paddling them on flat water. If there was somewhere I went regularly where I could hike+long float down river, now that would be fun.

Something to be said for getting a real boat, having a good paddle, stashing the boat in the woods while you spend a couple days hiking in and out. You get the best of both vs a compromise.

Shug - awesome video! Thank you! I have never read a backpacking report or watched a BP video. It was very educational and entertaining.

I would love to see you do a canoe trip and report on that. Your love of the outdoors really shows through, and the humor is icing on the cake.

Great video. I enjoyed your commentary. We were camped on Rangeline Lake the night of the big storm and had a huge tree fall over our tent. 8" from being crushed. Anyway, we were the first ones to hack our way out from Rangeline to Hustler via the trail. I recognized a couple spots from your video and yes, someone did an amazing job of clearing the area. It took us 4 1/2 hours to hack our way to Hustler. Great area, we'd do it again. Thanks for sharing your trip. Here's what a piece of the trail looked like on 7.22.2014.
