Trip Introduction:

Report

We headed in through Mudro to Horse Thursday morning and set up camp at the island site on the north end of Horse. Nice site, it was pretty open so we could get some breezes through camp to keep the mosquitoes down. We ended up having pretty good luck in the evenings for walleyes using bobbers and leeches right from the campsite.    Friday we headed for Lower Basswood Falls for a day trip. Only had to take the three marked portages on the way downstream. We made it to LBF and ate lunch and enjoyed the scenery. On our way back to Horse Lake we had a couple extra short portages to bypass small rapid areas. When we were about 3/4 of the way back to Horse, we could hear thunder and see dark clouds coming at us. The wind suddenly went from 10mph to 30mph and it started to rain. We pulled off the river and it started hailing so we flipped a canoe and the four of us sat under it for a 5 minute pea to marble sized hail storm. The storm blew over quickly and the wind went down, so we went back on the water and paddled to camp.   Saturday, fished in the early morning and then packed up and headed out through Mudro.

Overall a short, but fun trip. Mosquitoes were bad on portages and in the evening. The walleye bite was best after sunset in 6-12 ft of water.
